Candidate set: Rakuten, Five Principles for Success #18

Description

@tig

One of ten candidate sets. Tracking issue: sourcing status, model fit, and what has to happen before the data lands.

Sourcing: verified

https://global.rakuten.com/corp/about/philosophy/principle/ returns 200 with six matches for "principles for success" in the page. Rakuten's own corporate site, current page.

The set

The Five Principles for Success, part of Rakuten Shugi:

  1. Always Improve, Always Advance
  2. Passionately Professional
  3. Hypothesize, Practice, Validate, Shikumika
  4. Maximize Customer Satisfaction
  5. Speed, Speed, Speed

Model fit

  • Named principles: yes, literally. This and Fast Retailing are the only two candidates where the company uses the word.
  • Behavioral: mostly. Three and five are imperatives; two is an adjective phrase and will need care.
  • Calibratable: yes, and two of them are almost too easy. "Speed, Speed, Speed" has a very obvious over, and "Always Improve, Always Advance" over-indexed is change for its own sake.
  • Operational: drilled company-wide at the weekly Asakai, so these are lived rather than posted.
  • Count: five, which is at the small end but within range.

Two things to sort out

Shikumika has no English equivalent and Rakuten does not translate it. Roughly, building a repeatable mechanism from what a hypothesis proved. The record has to carry the company's word, and the calibration rows will have to do the explaining. That is fine, and arguably the interesting part, but it is worth knowing before authoring.

The published styling is emphatic, "Speed!! Speed!! Speed!!". Punctuation is not one of the three permitted normalizations in SCHEMA.md, which allows only markup stripping, ASCII folding, and obvious typo correction. Dropping the exclamation marks would be a fourth. Either the name carries them or the rule needs a fourth clause, and the second option should be resisted.

Before adding

  1. Transcribe all five verbatim, including the emphatic punctuation, and decide the question above.
  2. Confirm whether Rakuten publishes descriptions per principle or only the names.
  3. Author calibration rows.
