Adds v2 variants that bind the leaf key to the signed certificate (via cert_binding), for the signers the v1 circuits covered:

  • proof_a_ecdsa_p384_sha384_v2: leaves signed with ecdsa-with-SHA384
  • proof_a_skip_v2: 2-cert chains (ProofMode), now verifies the leaf signature against the root key
  • proof_b_ps256_v2: RSA-PSS claim signatures
  • proof_a_rsa_2048_v2, proof_a_rsa_4096_v2: RSA intermediates, full-modulus key hash (cert_binding::rsa_key_hash)

All keep the 52-value ProofA and 7-value ProofB public layouts. Added to the CI matrix. Tested locally on nargo 1.0.0-beta.18.

cert_binding gains walk_tbs, read_p256_spki, assert_sig_alg and
SHA-384/SHA-512 TBS hashing (zkpassport/sha512 v0.1.1, already a
transitive dependency of noir_rsa). bind_leaf_cert is unchanged, so the
existing v2 circuits compile to identical bytecode.

proof_a_ecdsa_p384_sha384_v2 hashes the leaf TBS with SHA-384 in-circuit,
requires the TBS signature algorithm to be ecdsa-with-SHA384, and keeps
the 52-value public layout of proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2. Tests use a
synthetic P-384/SHA-384 chain, with tampered-key, tampered-date and
wrong-algorithm negatives.

proof_a_skip_v2 verifies the root's ECDSA P-256 signature over the leaf
TBSCertificate, hashed in-circuit with SHA-512 (ecdsa-with-SHA512, as
ProofMode signs), and takes the leaf key and validity dates from the
DER walk. The root SPKI is the Merkle leaf, as for v2 intermediates.
Public layout and input names match proof_a_ecdsa_p256_v2; claim and
assertion size classes follow v1 proof_a_skip.

cert_binding gains bind_leaf_cert_sha512 and the ProofMode leaf as a
test vector (root key recovered from the leaf signature, since the
root certificate is not in the C2PA chain).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
cert_binding gains read_rsa2048_spki (rsaEncryption, 2048-bit modulus,
e = 65537), be_bytes_to_limbs, rsa_key_hash over all modulus limbs,
p256_key_hash, and bind_leaf_cert_rsa_signed for sha256WithRSAEncryption
issuers, which reads the leaf key type (P-256 or RSA-2048) from the SPKI
DER. Tests cover the real Adobe RSA leaf and synthetic RSA chains.

proof_b_ps256_v2 verifies the PS256 COSE signature with the leaf modulus
given as bytes (limbs derived in-circuit) and derives the nullifier from
the full-modulus key hash, so it pairs with RSA ProofA v2. Public layout
matches proof_b_es256_v2 (7 values).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The leaf TBS is hashed (SHA-256) and DER-walked in-circuit, the TBS
signature algorithm must be sha256WithRSAEncryption, and the RSA-2048
intermediate's PKCS#1 v1.5 signature is verified over that digest. The
leaf key type comes from the SPKI DER; the nullifier uses
pedersen_hash([x, y]) for P-256 and the full-modulus key hash for RSA,
matching proof_b_es256_v2 and proof_b_ps256_v2. The intermediate
modulus and signature are bytes, and intermediate_leaf hashes all 18
limbs. Public layout matches the v2 templates (52 values).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Same structure as proof_a_rsa_2048_v2 with a 512-byte intermediate
modulus and signature (35 limbs). intermediate_leaf hashes all 35
limbs. Public layout matches the v2 templates (52 values).

Walkthrough

The change extends certificate binding to SHA-384, SHA-512, and RSA-2048 subject keys. It adds ProofA v2 circuits for P-384 ECDSA, direct-root SHA-512, RSA-2048, and RSA-4096 certificates, plus a ProofB v2 circuit for PS256 signatures. The CI matrix now includes these circuits.

The Truepic CA behind ChatGPT images signs leaf certificates with
sha384WithRSAEncryption, which proof_a_rsa_2048_v2 does not accept.
This variant hashes the leaf TBS with SHA-384 and verifies the
intermediate's PKCS#1 v1.5 signature over it; everything else matches
proof_a_rsa_2048_v2. Tested against the real ChatGPT chain.

cert_binding gains bind_leaf_cert_rsa_signed_sha384; existing circuits
compile to the same bytecode.

Store packed in packed_seed before hashing.

poseidon_hash_bytes computes each 31-byte packed value and then discards it. packed_seed stays all zeros, so the Poseidon2 hash depends only on SeedBytes. hash_to_curve uses this value as both the witness-generation seed and outer_hash. Two different seeds of the same length therefore produce the same (x, y) point.

Current callers reach this path. derive_offset_generators.nr calls Curve::hash_to_curve(seed) at lines 18 and 138. Each call returns the same point for every seed of a given length.

Fix: write each computed packed value into packed_seed, and index padded_seed by i * 31 + j, not i.

🐛 Suggested fix
-    let packed_seed: [Field; SeedBytes / 31 + 1] = [0; SeedBytes / 31 + 1];
+    let mut packed_seed: [Field; SeedBytes / 31 + 1] = [0; SeedBytes / 31 + 1];
     for i in 0..SeedBytes / 31 + 1 {
         let mut packed: Field = 0;
         for _ in 0..31 {
             packed *= 256;
-            packed += padded_seed[i] as Field;
+            packed += padded_seed[i * 31 + j] as Field;
         }
+        packed_seed[i] = packed;
     }

The padded_seed index in the suggested fix must use the inner loop variable. The _ placeholder in the loop must change to a named variable j, for example for j in 0..31.

Bound the content-hash offset to claim_length.

verify_content_hash_in_claim validates the offset against the full buffer size C, not the signed claim length. The PS256 vector uses a 256-byte buffer but a 96-byte claim (cert_binding/src/rsa_vectors.nr:39).

A prover can place the signed claim in the first 96 bytes, put another hash at an offset such as 100, and pass that offset. sha256_var hashes only the first 96 bytes, but the helper accepts the suffix hash. The verifier then uses this unsigned value for content_hash and the nullifier.

Pass claim_length to the helper and reject offsets where content_hash_offset + 32 > claim_length.

Add a negative test for the content-hash mismatch path.

test_content_hash_binding calls verify_content_hash_in_claim only with a matching value. Removing the assert at hash_chain.nr:393-396 would leave this test passing. No other test in the RSA-4096 package rejects a mismatched content hash through this helper, so the regression would not be caught.

Require actions verification when the claim contains actions.

actions_assertion_hash_offset == 0 skips verification and returns [0u8; 32]. The circuit has no claim-content check that proves actions are absent. A prover can therefore omit the signed actions history from the public actions commitment.

The downstream image_aggregator includes this value in image_commitment. selective_disclosure treats zero as a valid hidden-actions value, so it does not reject this inconsistent claim.

Require actions verification for claims that contain actions.

When actions_assertion_hash_offset == 0, the circuit skips verify_actions_assertion_chain and returns an all-zero hash. It does not prove that the signed claim has no actions.

image_aggregator accepts this hash and includes it in image_commitment. A prover can therefore submit action bytes that are not bound to the signed claim.

Bind the exact witnesses to authenticated EXIF values.

verify_assertion_chain checks only the hash of exif_assertion_bytes. It does not extract or compare the signed timestamp or GPS values.

Bind the exact GPS coordinates to the authenticated EXIF assertion, or document that they are unauthenticated.

The location range check uses only prover-supplied witnesses. exact_lat_scaled, exact_lon_scaled, and the sign flags are range-checked and used to compute distance_squared against the disclosed circle. The circuit never parses those values from exif_assertion_bytes. It only checks that the assertion bytes hash to the value in the signed claim. A prover whose signed image lies outside the disclosed circle can therefore supply coordinates at the circle center. The circuit accepts that proof and commits to the false location through location_commitment.

proof_a_skip_v2/src/hash_chain.nr says tampering with GPS "would require finding a hash collision" (lines 255-264). That is incorrect for exact_lat_scaled and exact_lon_scaled, because they are not hashed from the assertion bytes. SECURITY.md documents the gap as a known limitation. Its mitigation, the commitment, shows only that disclosed values match what the prover committed to. It does not show that they match the signed image.

A fix needs an in-circuit binding, such as parsing the GPS rationals from the CBOR assertion at known offsets, as the hash_chain.nr comment suggests. That change is substantial, so no localized diff is proposed. If the trust model stays as documented, update the hash_chain.nr comment so it no longer states that GPS tampering requires a hash collision. The grep output also shows the same exact_lat_scaled distance and location_commitment pattern in other ProofA variants, so a fix should cover them together.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed capture time in proof_a_skip_v2.

exact_timestamp is a private witness. The circuit checks it only against the disclosed range (time_min..time_max). Nothing ties it to the capture time inside the signed assertion. A prover can therefore use an in-range value that differs from the signed time, and the circuit accepts it.

The hash-chain code defines the binding but the circuit never calls it. verify_timestamp_binding in proof_a_skip_v2/src/hash_chain.nr extracts the CBOR timestamp from the assertion and compares it with the expected value. No main.nr calls it. main.nr calls only verify_assertion_chain, which checks assertion bytes by hash and never reads the timestamp.

The disclosure check also does not close the gap. selective_disclosure/src/main.nr verifies only that Poseidon2([exact_timestamp, time_salt], 2) equals time_commitment. The prover computes that commitment from the same value, so the check passes for a value that does not match the signed time.

Correction: extract the CBOR capture timestamp from claim_bytes-linked assertion bytes in the circuit, and assert that it equals exact_timestamp. The verify_timestamp_binding helper is the intended mechanism. Its call must also respect skip_assertion_hash_verification, because the helper runs the full hash chain itself. Choose the timestamp offset source before you wire it in. I have not verified a complete code change, so I am not proposing a diff.

Reject signature components at or above the P-384 order.

verify_ecdsa_p384 decodes sig_r and sig_s with from_be_bytes, which accepts any value below 2^384. It then checks only that each value is nonzero. It does not check that r and s are below the group order n. FIPS 186-5 requires 1 ≤ r, s ≤ n-1, and the code comment at lines 23 and 27 names that rule.

For a valid signature (r0, s) with r0 < 2^384 - n (about 2^190), the encoding r0 + n decodes. Constrained multiplication and equality reduce modulo n, so the circuit accepts r0 + n. Strict ECDSA verification rejects it. This case is rare, because an honest signature must have a small residue. Still, the proof accepts a noncanonical encoding that the standard rejects.

Add validate_in_field() to both components. Because the existing nonzero checks already reject n, the result is 1 ≤ r, s ≤ n-1.

Update the stale bignum compatibility note in VENDORED_FROM.md.

Line 21 says the vendored code uses noir-bignum v0.8.2 and is "compatible with project's existing noir-bignum@v0.8.0". The package does not use v0.8.0 or v0.8.2. proof_a_ecdsa_p384_sha384_v2/Nargo.toml pins bignum to tag v0.9.2, and that pin is the only other version reference in the package. A maintainer who refreshes the vendor from this note can select the wrong bignum version. The note should state the version this package pins.

+- Upstream noir_bigcurve was built against noir-bignum v0.8.2 at vendoring time. This package pins noir-bignum v0.9.2 in `Nargo.toml`.

Guard the zero-multiplication case in evaluate_linear_expression.

The free function evaluate_linear_expression in proof_a_ecdsa_p384_sha384_v2/src/crypto/noir_bigcurve_vendor/mod.nr reads index 0 of arrays sized by NMuls without checking that NMuls > 0. When a caller passes NMuls = 0 with at least one addend, the array access at line 955 is out of bounds. The expression cannot return the sum of the addends. Compilation or witness generation fails instead.

The public trait accepts this input. The trait declaration at lines 65-69 takes [Self; NMuls] arrays, and the doc comment does not require a nonempty multiplication array. The derive impl at lines 174-179 forwards the arguments without a check. The msm wrapper at line 362 also passes [P; 0] add arrays through to this method.

Add an explicit branch for NMuls == 0, or assert on NMuls at the trait boundary, so the failure is clear and the add-only case is handled. This change needs a check of the transcript offsets and the final offset subtraction, which depend on NMuls. Those offsets are outside the scope inspected here, so no edit is proposed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Read each byte of the 31-byte chunk when packing the seed.

In poseidon_hash_bytes, the packing loop indexes padded_seed with the chunk number i, not with a byte offset. Every position in a chunk takes the same byte, padded_seed[i]. Bytes at index i * 31 + j never enter the packed value, except the chunk's first byte. Once the packed value is stored in packed_seed, two seeds that differ only in ignored bytes produce the same hash input. The current seed call sites use a fixed seed, so this does not affect production today. Fix the index now, because the function is new in this PR.

Suggested fix
     for i in 0..SeedBytes / 31 + 1 {
         let mut packed: Field = 0;

+            packed += padded_seed[i * 31 + j] as Field;
         }
     }

The packed value must also be assigned to packed_seed[i] and that array made mutable. The current code never does this, so the hash receives only zeros. Track that defect separately.

Confirm the intended PS256 salt-length policy, or enforce 32 bytes.

pss_salt_len is a private input. proof_b_ps256_v2/src/main.nr:160 passes it to verify_sha256_pss with no check on its value. A signature made with a 20-byte salt and pss_salt_len = 20 therefore verifies. RFC 8230 defines PS256 with a salt length of 32 octets, so the circuit can accept a signature that a conforming PS256 verifier rejects. The comment at line 76 says 20 is accepted because Adobe may use it. That exception is deliberate, but it is not documented as a PS256 exception, and the circuit's header describes the check as a "valid PS256 signature". Add an explicit allowed-salt-length rule in the circuit, or document that 20-byte salts are an accepted PS256 variant. Keep the exception scoped to the intended signers.

Bind proof_timestamp to the signing time before relying on the validity check.

The check at proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/main.nr:235-240 requires not_before <= proof_timestamp <= not_after. proof_timestamp is a public input that the prover supplies. No inspected constraint ties it to the time the claim was signed. The ProofB circuits only range-check it, and the aggregator only checks that the ProofA and ProofB values match. If the leaf key signs a claim after not_after, the prover can choose any date inside the validity window. The proof then verifies and asserts a validity result for a signature made outside the certificate's validity period.

Tie the validity check to a time that the signature establishes, such as a timestamp in the signed claim or a TSA token. Alternatively, pin proof_timestamp in the verifier. Either change spans the proof circuits and the aggregator, so this review does not propose a localized edit.

Add a middle-limb sensitivity test for rsa_key_hash.

test_rsa_key_hash_differs_in_high_limbs mutates only m[0], the top byte, which falls in limb 17. The hash function covers every limb, so the current code is correct. However, no test in the repository would fail if rsa_key_hash stopped committing to a middle limb. The v1 bug was a limb-subset error, so this regression class is the one the v2 change fixes. A regression that drops limbs 1 through 16 while keeping the top limb would leave every existing test passing. The 4096-bit test at proof_a_rsa_4096_v2/src/main.nr:672-676 has the same gap: it also mutates only m[0].

The other rsa_key_hash assertions compare the function's output with itself, so they cannot detect a change to the function. The modulus-swap test at proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/main.nr:702 uses an equality check, not an inequality check, for the same reason.

Reuse the actions assertion digest instead of hashing it again.

When actions_assertion_hash_offset > 0, the proof runs SHA-256 over actions_assertion_bytes twice. verify_actions_assertion_hash computes the digest, compares it to the claim hash, and discards it. main then recomputes the same digest. The second hash adds in-circuit cost for each proof that includes an actions assertion. It does not change the proof's outputs. The repository evidence does not measure the cost, so the size of the increase is unknown.

Make verify_actions_assertion_hash return computed_hash, pass that value up through verify_actions_assertion_chain, and use it in main. After the comparison loop passes, computed_hash equals expected_hash, so the returned value is the same digest that main computes today.

Coordinate checks establish only that magnitudes fit u64; they do not enforce the latitude and longitude ranges implied by scaled geographic coordinates.

The circuit can prove a zero-distance privacy circle centered on an impossible geographic position.

This can occur when: A prover supplies a latitude corresponding to 91 degrees and sets both the exact and center latitude to that value.

The intermediate trust-list leaf now hashes all 35 modulus limbs; the file documents that v1 trust-list leaves hashed only eight. A trust-list producer still using the old formulation would publish roots for which this circuit cannot prove membership.

Valid certificates issued by that intermediate fail ProofA membership verification.

This can occur when: A currently promoted RSA-4096 intermediate remains in a trust list built with the v1 leaf formulation.

verify_leaf_certificate passes prover-supplied intermediate_redc into BigNumParams::new without a visible check that it is the reduction parameter for intermediate_modulus. If the bignum implementation trusts that parameter, its RSA verification could be unsound.

The circuit could accept a forged leaf certificate.

This can occur when: A dishonest prover supplies a trusted intermediate modulus with deliberately inconsistent reduction limbs and a certificate signature that is not valid under that modulus.

Direct-root chains require the trust-list Merkle tree to contain pedersen_hash([root_x, root_y]) as a leaf. If the trust-list publisher still enrolls only intermediates or uses a different root-SPKI representation, genuine ProofMode chains cannot satisfy membership.

Valid direct-root proofs fail the trust-list check.

This can occur when: A valid ProofMode certificate is issued directly by a trusted root that is not enrolled in the tree in this exact leaf form.

Restrict content and assertion offsets to the signed claim length.

verify_claim_hash hashes only the first claim_length bytes of claim_bytes. The content-hash and assertion-hash extractors bound their offsets only by MAX_CLAIM_SIZE (1280). A prover can therefore place a chosen 32-byte value in the unhashed padding and have the circuit accept it as the content or assertion hash from the signed claim.

Trigger: the signed claim is 500 bytes, and the prover sets content_hash_offset to 600. The prover fills claim_bytes[600..632] with the chosen value. The claim-hash check still passes, because it covers only bytes 0–499. The offset check 600 + 32 <= 1280 also passes, and the content-hash equality check accepts the padded value. The same path applies to exif_assertion_hash_offset and actions_assertion_hash_offset.

Consequence: a proof can show that an arbitrary content hash appears in a signed claim when it does not. Add a check that the extracted range lies within the signed length. For example, in src/main.nr, before line 321, add assert(content_hash_offset + 32 <= claim_length, "Content hash offset exceeds signed claim length");. Apply the same bound to the assertion offsets. The extractors in src/hash_chain.nr need claim_length as an input for a bound inside the extractor itself.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed EXIF timestamp in main.

main range-checks exact_timestamp only against time_min and time_max. It never compares that value to the timestamp in the signed assertion. The prover supplies exact_timestamp as a private witness. A prover who holds a signed capture time A outside the requested range can set exact_timestamp to a time B inside the range. The circuit accepts the proof, and time_commitment commits to B.

hash_chain.nr already defines verify_timestamp_binding, which extracts the CBOR timestamp from the signed assertion and asserts it equals expected_timestamp. No proof main calls it, so the binding is not enforced.

exact_edit_timestamp has the same gap. It is range-checked against edit_time_min and edit_time_max and committed in edit_time_commitment, with no link to signed metadata.

image_aggregator forwards time_commitment and edit_time_commitment without checking them against signed metadata. A consumer that treats these commitments as signed capture or edit times receives unbound values.

Add the missing call in proof_a_ecdsa_p384_sha384_v2/src/main.nr, for example verify_timestamp_binding(exif_assertion_bytes, <signed timestamp offset>, exact_timestamp), after the assertion chain is verified. The timestamp offset must be a witness or a value that is constrained to the signed assertion. The inspected code does not show a timestamp offset input in main, so this comment does not provide a line-level diff. The edit-timestamp binding needs the signed edit-time location, which the inspected code does not identify.

In main, after verifying the assertion chain, bind exact_timestamp to the
timestamp extracted from exif_assertion_bytes with verify_timestamp_binding,
using an offset constrained to the signed assertion rather than an unconstrained
witness. Also bind exact_edit_timestamp to its signed metadata timestamp before
committing it; locate or establish that signed timestamp location without
leaving either commitment unbound.

Bind the private GPS coordinates to the signed EXIF GPS values.

main takes exact_lat_scaled, exact_lon_scaled, and their sign flags as private inputs. It checks their distance from the public center against radius_squared_scaled. It then verifies the signed assertion bytes against the claim hash. Nothing in the circuit compares the private coordinates with the GPS values inside those bytes.

A prover can supply the genuine signed assertion, which records location A, together with exact coordinates B inside the circle. The hash chain and the circle check both pass. The proof then certifies that the signed location lies inside the circle, even when A lies outside it.

The security note in hash_chain.nr assumes that changing the GPS values would break the hash. That holds only if the circuit derives the coordinates from the hashed bytes, and this circuit does not.

Remedy: parse the GPS values from the verified assertion bytes in the circuit, then assert equality with exact_lat_scaled, exact_lon_scaled, and the sign flags before the circle check. This needs CBOR rational parsing, so it is not a local change. I did not establish a safe localized patch.

Call verify_timestamp_binding for the skip circuit.

exact_timestamp is a private witness. The circuit only checks that it fits in u64 and falls within [time_min, time_max].

The circuit verifies the assertion hash conditionally, but it never compares the assertion timestamp with exact_timestamp. A proof can therefore use a timestamp that differs from the signed assertion timestamp.

Remove the content-hash bypass from the skip proof.

When skip_content_hash_binding is 1, proof_a_skip_v2 skips the comparison between public content_hash and the signed claim. The same public value still feeds expected_nullifier, so a prover can submit another image’s hash with a valid claim signature.

Add a negative PS256 test for a claim that is not embedded in the signed structure.

The claim-embedding check at proof_b_ps256_v2/src/main.nr:169-175 (verify_bytes_embedded) has no negative test. Removing it leaves every test in the suite passing:

  • test_valid_vector_returns_link_commit uses a correctly embedded claim, so it passes without the check.
  • test_tampered_sig_structure_rejected fails earlier, at the sig_structure hash comparison (line 166), before the embedding check runs.
  • test_other_leaf_key_rejected, test_wrong_salt_len_rejected, and test_nullifier_from_low_limbs_only_rejected fail on RSA verification or the nullifier check, which run before line 169.
  • test_wrong_content_hash_rejected changes only content_hash. It fails at the content-hash binding (line 184), and the embedding check still passes on the unchanged fixture.

Without this check, the circuit hashes claim_bytes and compares the result to claim_hash. It does not confirm that claim_bytes appear in the signed sig_structure. A regression of this check would not fail the suite.

Add a test that keeps the valid signature and sig_structure, but changes the claim binding. For example, shift claim_offset so that the claim does not match the signed bytes at that position:

#[test(should_fail)]
fn test_claim_offset_not_embedded_rejected() {
    let mut c = good();
    c.claim_offset = c.claim_offset + 1;
    let _ = run(c);
}

Use a should_fail_with message after reading the error text in verify_bytes_embedded. The should_fail form accepts failure from any check, so it does not isolate this path.

Recompute the nullifier for the other key in test_other_leaf_key_rejected.

The test replaces modulus and redc but keeps the original nullifier. The nullifier check is the last assert in verify_proof_b_ps256. It runs after the RSA check and after the signature-structure, claim, and Merkle checks. If verify_sha256_pss were broken and accepted the signature, execution would still fail at the nullifier assertion with "Invalid nullifier". The #[test(should_fail)] attribute accepts any failure, so the test would still pass and the regression would go undetected.

The same gap does not affect test_wrong_salt_len_rejected. That test leaves the nullifier unchanged, so a broken RSA check would let it run to completion and fail the test.

Recomputing the nullifier from the replacement modulus makes the RSA check the only remaining reason for failure. With a correct RSA check, the test still fails. With a broken RSA check, the program runs to completion, no assertion fails, and the test fails as intended.

Bind the exact GPS witness to the signed EXIF GPS in the circuit.

The circuit never checks the private exact GPS witness against the signed assertion. A prover can attest to a location that differs from the signed metadata.

exact_lat_scaled and exact_lon_scaled are private inputs (proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/main.nr:154-155). The circuit only checks that they lie inside the disclosed circle around the public center_lat_scaled and center_lon_scaled, using the distance check at main.nr:294-327. Nothing in the circuit reads GPS from the assertion bytes or compares those bytes with the witness. The verify_assertion_chain call at main.nr:348-349 runs only when skip_assertion_hash_verification == 0. It proves that the assertion bytes are authentic. It does not prove what location they contain.

The security note in proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/hash_chain.nr (lines 233-264) says that hashing the assertion bytes binds the GPS values and that the client extracts GPS from them. That reasoning does not cover the exact witness. Authentic bytes that contain location A do not stop a prover from setting the witness to location B.

Trigger: the prover uses a valid signed assertion with location A. The prover then sets the exact GPS witness to location B, inside the disclosed circle.
Consequence: the proof verifies and attests that the image is at B, while the signed metadata says A.

Whether this harms a verifier depends on the verifier's policy. The hypothesis expects a receiver to reject A, but this repository does not show that policy. The misattestation itself does not depend on it.

Fix options:

  • Parse the GPS rational values from the verified assertion in the circuit, and constrain them to equal the exact witness. The note estimates 500-1000 added constraints.
  • Or remove the GPS binding claim. Treat the exact location as unverified client input, and do not present the proof as a location attestation.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed EXIF timestamp in the RSA-2048 circuit.

main.nr never extracts the capture time from exif_assertion_bytes. It range-checks the private exact_timestamp witness against time_min and time_max, then commits to it. Nothing compares that witness with the value in the signed assertion. As a result, a prover can use any time inside the disclosed range, even when the signed capture time is outside it.

verify_timestamp_binding in proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/hash_chain.nr is meant to close this gap. Its doc comment says it "Proves that exact_timestamp actually came from the signed assertion." It has no caller in proof_a_rsa_2048_v2. Step 8c calls verify_assertion_chain, which does not take or check a timestamp. The fix is to call verify_timestamp_binding with exact_timestamp as expected_timestamp in step 8c. This needs a new private witness for timestamp_offset. The circuit must also constrain that offset to the timestamp field in the signed assertion. Otherwise a prover can point it at a different signed integer. The fix changes the circuit's private inputs, so it also requires regenerating the verifier artifacts. Decide how the skip_assertion_hash_verification path should bind time before changing it.

Check trust_list_root against the promoted Oracle root in verify_and_store.

verify_and_store accepts any non-zero trust_list_root and never compares it with an authoritative root. The circuit's Merkle check at proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/main.nr:229 is correct for its own inputs. It only proves that the intermediate is in the tree whose root the prover supplies. Nothing in the verifier confirms that root is the Oracle's promoted root.

A prover can build a tree that contains their own RSA intermediate. They can then prove a valid leaf chain under that root and call verify_and_store with it. The call passes every check and inserts a VerifiedMediaNote for owner, although the chain is not in the trusted list.

The failing path:

  • aztec_verifier/src/main.nr:182 only asserts trust_list_root != 0.
  • aztec_verifier/src/main.nr:195-197 checks only the padding and root_commitment entries. public_values[0..8] are forced to zero, so trust_list_root is not among the public values passed to verify_honk_proof.
  • aztec_verifier/src/main.nr:209 verifies the proof without binding the trust_list_root argument to it.
  • aztec_verifier/src/main.nr:236-249 stores the argument in the note.

The contract's only other root, verification_root (aztec_verifier/src/main.nr:125, :373, :380), is an admin-set index root. No code compares it with trust_list_root.

Fix: store the promoted Oracle root in a form the contract can read, and assert equality in verify_and_store before the note is created. Alternatively, publish the root through public_values so verify_honk_proof binds it. The repository does not show how the Oracle publishes the root, so this change needs a design decision and no diff is proposed.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed EXIF capture time.

In proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/main.nr, the time-range checks at lines 252-253 compare the private exact_timestamp witness with time_min and time_max. Nothing in the circuit ties that witness to the capture time in the signed EXIF assertion. Step 8c calls verify_assertion_chain, which proves only that exif_assertion_bytes hash to the value referenced by the signed claim. It does not parse or compare a timestamp. The helper that would perform the comparison, verify_timestamp_binding, is defined in proof_a_rsa_2048_v2/src/hash_chain.nr but is not called in this circuit. As a result, a prover can use a signed photo whose EXIF capture time lies outside the requested range and supply an exact_timestamp inside that range. The circuit accepts the proof and commits to the supplied value in time_commitment (lines 385-388).

Either bind the timestamp in the circuit or reject the proof. A correct binding needs the EXIF timestamp offset as a new input. The circuit should extract the timestamp from exif_assertion_bytes and assert that it equals exact_timestamp when skip_assertion_hash_verification == 0. The current doc comment at hash_chain.nr:324 states that verify_assertion_chain proves this binding, but its code does not. Correct that comment with the fix.

Bind exact_lat_scaled and exact_lon_scaled to the authenticated EXIF GPS.

The privacy-circle check compares two prover-supplied values. It does not compare either value with the GPS data in the signed assertion. exif_assertion_bytes is only hash-checked, never parsed. A prover with a validly signed image whose EXIF GPS lies outside the disclosed circle can set exact_lat_scaled/exact_lon_scaled to the circle center. The assertion at lines 325-328 then passes. location_commitment binds the chosen point, so the proof attests a location that the signed metadata does not contain.

The hash-chain notes say the client extracts GPS from the verified bytes. The circuit does not enforce that extraction. The prover controls the client, so the note does not prevent a forged witness.

A safe localized correction is not established by the inspected code. Possible fixes are to parse the GPS values from exif_assertion_bytes in the circuit and constrain the exact_* witnesses to them, or to remove the in-circle claim from this circuit's contract. Either fix changes the circuit design, so no diff is proposed.

Reject ProofA outputs when EXIF assertion verification is skipped.

skip_assertion_hash_verification == 1 bypasses the only check that compares exif_assertion_bytes with the hash stored in the signed claim. The circuit still returns location_commitment and time_commitment.

image_aggregator consumes these ProofA outputs without checking the skip flag. A proof can therefore provide commitments that the consumer treats as authenticated even though the EXIF assertion is not claim-bound.

Bind claim_hash to a signature over the claim.

verify_claim_hash only checks that claim_hash equals SHA256(claim_bytes). The ECDSA verification authenticates the certificate TBS digest, not claim_hash or claim_bytes. The circuit therefore accepts claim bytes and metadata that are not authenticated by the certificate signature.

Add COSE signature verification that covers this exact claim_hash before accepting the hash chain.

Validate the assertion reference before hashing EXIF bytes.

When exif_assertion_hash_offset points to another 32-byte digest in the signed claim, the circuit accepts the corresponding unrelated object as exif_assertion_bytes. extract_assertion_hash_from_claim checks only buffer bounds. It does not verify the CBOR reference label or assertion identity. The metadata path trusts the supplied assertion bytes, so the skip proof can bind to the wrong object.

Bind the assertion offset to claim_length.

extract_assertion_hash_from_claim checks only the padded buffer bound. It does not check that the offset is inside the authenticated claim prefix.

verify_claim_hash hashes only the first claim_length bytes. A prover can therefore place an assertion digest in the padding and pass its offset to verify_assertion_chain. The circuit then accepts the matching assertion as referenced by the verified claim.

Pass claim_length to verify_assertion_chain and reject offsets where hash_offset + 32 > claim_length.

Bind the exact GPS witness to the signed assertion.

The circuit authenticates exif_assertion_bytes, but it does not extract GPS values or compare them with exact_lat_scaled and exact_lon_scaled. A prover can supply an in-circle location B even when the signed assertion contains location A. The returned location_commitment then commits to B.

Add a mismatched-hash regression test.

test_content_hash_binding only passes expected_hash = 1, which matches the extracted hash. A helper that removes the comparison would still pass. Add a test that expects verify_content_hash_in_claim to reject a different hash.

Review comment at @proof_a_skip_v2/src/hash_chain.nr around lines 497 - 498:
Add a mismatched-hash regression case to test_content_hash_binding that calls
verify_content_hash_in_claim with a hash different from the extracted hash and
verifies that it rejects the claim; retain the existing matching-hash case.

Call the circuit from the time-range test.

test_time_range_exact_bounds compares only local constants. It does not call main or a shared range helper.

If main reverses or removes its time-range assertions, this test still passes. Add a test that invokes main with valid and out-of-range exact_timestamp values.

Update test_time_range_exact_bounds to invoke main with valid and out-of-range
exact_timestamp values, verifying that in-range input passes and out-of-range
input is rejected by main’s time-range assertions rather than merely comparing
local constants.

Bind content and assertion lookups to the signed claim length.

verify_claim_hash authenticates only the first claim_length bytes of claim_bytes. The content-hash and assertion lookup helpers do not use claim_length. They check only that offset + 32 <= MAX_CLAIM_SIZE. A prover can therefore place a matching 32-byte reference at an offset past claim_length, inside the padding. The lookup then succeeds, and the proof treats that reference as bound to the signed claim.

Consequence: a proof can bind a content_hash or assertion to a signed claim when the matching reference is not in the signed span. Substitution attacks that the content-hash binding is meant to prevent become possible.

Suggested direction: pass claim_length into the lookup helpers and assert that offset + 32 <= claim_length. Apply the same check to the EXIF and actions assertion offsets. Apply it before the lookup in verify_content_hash_in_claim, extract_assertion_hash_from_claim, and verify_actions_assertion_chain.

Review comment at @proof_a_skip_v2/src/main.nr around lines 339 - 340:
Pass claim_length into verify_content_hash_in_claim,
extract_assertion_hash_from_claim, and verify_actions_assertion_chain, and
validate that each content-hash, EXIF, or actions assertion offset plus 32 is no
greater than claim_length before performing its lookup; retain the existing
maximum-size bounds.
