EarthBuild/earthbuild (EarthBuild/earthbuild)
v0.8.19Compare Source
This release continues the
earthly→earthrename that began in v0.8.17, completing it from the user perspective. This is a compatibility release where you should be able to complete the
earthly->earthbuildmigration seamlessly in preparation forv0.9.0where we will break old earthly naming in favor of earth-naming-only support.Bug fixes
The v0.8.18 release notes documented the new binary name, but several paths still shipped or expected the old one — most visibly the published Docker image, which had no
earthon it at all. Those gaps are closed here. The
earthlyname continues to work via symlink and warnings untilv0.9.0.The published Docker image now ships the CLI as
earth(#801).docker run earthbuild/earthbuild earth ...previously failed withearth: not found, because+earthly-dockerhardcoded the installation name toearthlywhile the release binaries usedearth. That value is an ldflag driving the config dir, the buildkitd container name, the cache volume name and the buildkit port offset, so the image and the released binaries disagreed on all of them. The installation name is now declared once inrelease/Earthfileand threaded through, so they can't drift apart again. The CLI installs at/usr/bin/earthwith anearthlysymlink retained.Shell completion now registers for the name you actually type (#857).
bootstrap --with-autocompletehardcodedearthlyas the command word and wrote files namedearthly/_earthly, soearth <TAB>offered nothing. The command word and filenames are now derived from the running executable's basename; a binary installed asearthlyalso registersearth.Internal variables no longer emit unactionable deprecation warnings (#800). The
EARTHLY_→EARTH_rename covered the CLI surface but not the variables EarthBuild sets on itself, so the published image printed six migration warnings per invocation — andEARTHLY_WITH_DOCKERtold you to migrate to a name that was then silently ignored, losing theearth-in-earthcgroup bind-mount if you followed the advice. EarthBuild now only ever writesEARTH_names; readers still accept theEARTHLY_spelling (with a warning) via a compatibility shim, andWITH DOCKERsettings are passed todockerd-wrapper.shas flags rather than environment variables. An older CLI against a newer buildkitd image still works. Also: deprecated analytics and data collection config options have been removed (#852), CI workflows drop the obsolete
EARTHLY_INSTALL_ID(#809), and acurl --retry-all-errorssupport check was added to the ubuntu-kind tests (#908).Security
EXTRA_ARGS/RUN_EARTH_TEST_ARGSremoved as part of the fixes.nextbumped to 16.3.2 → 16.3.3 for a published advisory (#903, later 16.3.5 in #924). This affects the docs site on the CLI or buildkitd.golang.orgdocker/cli`, and the AWS SDK are all current as of this release.Docs
The docs are now consistently EarthBuild-branded:
Earthly→EarthBuildand theearthlyCLI →earthacross all markdown, with genuine upstream references (the fork banner, the migration deliberately left alone (#821). A follow-up pass fixed the fallout — broken links, staledocs.earthly.devURLs, dangling gitbook redirects messages still pointing at pre-rename page slugs (#919). The migration guide gained add notes (#851) and the top-levelWITH DOCKERreference a missing parameter (#881) — thanks to @JohnMoon-Voyager.Maintenance
Staging release workflow fixed (#917).
The buildkitd image tag suffix was re-derived as
latestby the consuming steps instead of matching the tag actually built, so staging releases only resolved after a separate CI run had pushedlatestfor the same SHA — failing on push and passing on re-run. The suffix is now aworkflow_calloutput.The DockerHub release jobs also stopped loading multi-platform images back into the runner's daemon, which was tripping
pull ping error. More on that error in the next release.Rename follow-through in the source tree.
cmd/earthly→cmd/earth(#822),earthly→earthin Go filenames (#847),EARTHLY_→EARTH_in GitHub Actions (#845), andearthly/lib→EarthBuild/lib(#775). The integration suite now drives theearthbinary throughout — roughly 176 call sites that had been exercising the compatibility symlink rather than the binary users get — with one deliberate test kept onearthlyto cover the deprecated path (#803).Go modernization. Toolchain to Go 1.27 (#836),
migration from
encoding/jsontoencoding/json/v2(#883), the standard library'suuid(#882), andcmp.Orin place of the homegrownStrOrDefault(#740).Two more golangci-lint checks are enabled:
fatcontext(#748) andrecvcheck(#749).buildkitd container and cache volume naming is centralized (#823).
CI. Build speedups (#615), buildkitd always shipped as an artifact so PRs test their own image (#737), consolidated retry and failure diagnostics
plus swap headroom (#736), GHA runners bumped from Ubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 (#826), and a main-branch workflow fix (#849).
Examples were updated to drop deprecated syntax (#850).
Dependencies. Around 100 Renovate updates across Go modules (gRPC, protobuf, logrus, testify, urfave/cli, docker/cli, containerd, AWS SDK, OpenTelemetry), Docker base images (dind, amazon linux, fedora, redis, vale), and the language examples (Node, Ruby, Scala/sbt, Java/Maven, Clojure, Python).
