I was looking into using https://github.com/Jinten/NodeGraph as it has more sorting/management features.
https://github.com/Wouterdek/NodeNetwork seems to be more maintained, but has performance issues, as well as not having grouping, comments, and the likes.
Maybe porting NodeNetwork's sorting methods to NodeGraph would be an option.
