Pull Request

Summary

Adds preferTextSubtitles and preferExternalSubtitles toggles to Settings > Subtitles, synchronizes them with Moonbase, and updates subtitle selection and track ordering on both the Details screen and Player across webOS and Tizen.

NOTE: While the initial intention was just to port the new settings, during testing it was found that the details screen was not updating between setting changes (even when I navigated to Home and back again). This PR also bundles in the fix for that issue, described below.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added preferences for text-based versus image-based subtitles and external files versus embedded tracks. These options appear when subtitles are enabled and sync with profiles.
    • Automatic subtitle selection now considers these preferences alongside language and track characteristics. Existing subtitle choices are retained until you choose another subtitle.
    • Subtitle track lists are ordered according to the external-track preference, making preferred tracks easier to find and select.

The change adds text-subtitle and external-subtitle preferences to settings and profile synchronization. Subtitle selection and track ordering use these preferences with stream metadata.

Changes: Subtitle Preferences and Selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preference settings and subtitle ranking
packages/app/src/context/defaultSettings.js, packages/app/src/context/SettingsContext.js, packages/app/src/views/Settings/settingsSchema.js, packages/app/resources/strings.json, packages/app/src/views/Player/initialSubtitle.js, packages/app/src/views/Player/initialSubtitle.test.js
Adds text and external subtitle preferences to defaults, synchronization, and settings. Subtitle ranking uses the preferences and normalized stream metadata. Tests cover preference ranking and subtitle-position resolution.
Details subtitle selection
packages/app/src/views/Details/Details.js, packages/app/src/views/Details/useDetailsItem.js, packages/app/src/views/Player/initialSubtitle.js
Details views resolve the initial subtitle from the current item, version, settings, and selected audio stream. Changing versions clears explicit track choices. Selecting the current version leaves track choices unchanged.
External subtitle track ordering
packages/app/src/utils/trackLabels.js, packages/app/src/utils/trackLabels.test.js, packages/app/src/views/Player/PlayerControls.js, packages/app/src/views/Details/DetailTrackModals.js, packages/app/src/views/Details/Details.js
Player and Details subtitle lists order external and internal tracks according to the preference. Details rows retain original stream positions for selection while displaying numbers in reordered order.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fa46f

If a viewer navigates between items quickly, the subtitle track highlighted on the Details page can briefly be wrong before it corrects itself. This is a small, self-correcting glitch and a quick fix; it does not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fa46f

The change affects which available subtitles are preferred, not who can access media. Existing playback controls remain in the traced paths. Compatibility with older servers and overlapping selection updates remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Enabling external preference can make an already advertised external subtitle win automatic selection. Server-controlled subtitle metadata and content therefore remain security-relevant inputs, but the traced selection scope is the current playback result or media source, not a newly privileged or cross-user operation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The resolver returns an existing stream or position rather than constructing requests. Traced playback consumers retain codec-specific rendering and burn-in negotiation, while subtitle requests retain session-associated item, media-source, stream-index and authentication inputs. No bypass of these controls was established by the preference changes.

component to check `getItemSubtitlePref` before series preferences or
`resolveBestSubtitle`; preserve a saved `-1` and use the series preference only
when the item preference is absent or unavailable. Add effect cleanup
cancellation so stale asynchronous item or series preference lookups cannot
update the selection after a newer run, while retaining the `subtitleChosenRef`
guard.

translations.

…trings resource keys

- Restore getItemSubtitlePref before checking series preferences and defaults in Details
- Add effect cleanup cancellation to guard against stale async preference lookups
- Add English resource keys for preferTextSubtitles and preferExternalSubtitles in strings.json
- Wait for allRowData to change rather than premature isLoading state
… will actually start on by reusing the player's own selection, keep forced tracks below full ones when text or external subtitles are preferred, and drop the duplicated subtitle lookups
