feat(assets): bulk "Set custom field" action on the asset index - #3260
Part of #3255 (the "Set custom field" bulk action). Independent of #3259.
Before: category, location and tags could be set on many assets at once, but a custom field (Brand, Supplier, ...) could only be set one asset at a time, or by exporting, editing and re-importing a spreadsheet.
Now: select assets, open Actions → Set custom field, pick a field and a value. By default it only fills assets that have no value for that field; "Replace their value" overwrites the rest. The toast says how many changed and why the others were left alone.
Ship path: no migration. After merge: test on app.shelf.nu, then the help article on bulk actions.
The value is validated with the asset form's own schema for the field type. A value that does not fit (an option the field does not have, a bad date or number) is refused with a 400 naming the field, and is not sent to Sentry.
The read, the decision and the writes share one transaction under the archive lock, so a value saved or an asset archived meanwhile is seen before anything is written. Archived assets are refused, like every other bulk edit.
A field limited to certain categories is skipped on assets in other categories, the same rule as the asset form.
An identical value is a no-op (the single edit's comparison). Replace updates every stored row for the field.
Each changed asset gets the single edit's note ("set Brand to Westermo" / "updated Brand from ... to ...") and one ASSET_CUSTOM_FIELD_CHANGED event (meta.viaBulk).
Route:api+/assets.bulk-update-custom-field.ts. GET lists the active fields for the dialog; POST runs the action. Both need asset: update; select-all goes through resolveAssetIdsForBulkOperation like the other bulk edits.
Dialog: loads the fields only while open. The value input follows the field type (dropdown, yes/no, date, number, text). Every opening starts with no field picked and the only-empty mode, so a "Replace" from an earlier batch never carries over.
Testing
modules/asset/bulk-custom-field.server.test.ts:
only-empty vs replace
identical value is a no-op
category skip
events and notes in the transaction
read happens under the archive lock
bad option refused
foreign field refused
toast text
test/routes-tests/api.assets.bulk-update-custom-field.test.ts: the GET payload key the dialog reads, POST parsing (including the default mode), the toast, and refusals.
Checked by hand against the QA database with seed assets:
Serial Number set on 3 empty assets: "Set on 3 assets."
Manufacturer in only-empty mode on 3 assets that already had one: "No asset needed changing. 3 assets already had a value and were left alone."
The asset's history shows "set Serial Number to SN-ZZ-001".
Reopening the dialog resets the field and the mode.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added bulk updates for asset custom fields, with options to fill empty values or replace existing ones.
Choose from fields available to your organization, with inputs suited to each field type, including options, dates, numbers, and text.
Fields that don’t apply to selected asset categories are skipped, and the results report how many assets changed or were skipped.
The bulk action is available to users with asset-update permission and respects archived-asset restrictions.
Sets one custom field to one value on many assets at once, next to bulk
category, location and tags. Before this, the only way was a spreadsheet
export, edit and re-import. Part of #3255.
- Two modes: only fill assets that have no value (default), or replace
every selected asset's value. An identical value is a no-op.
- The value is validated with the asset form's own schema for the field
type; options, dates and numbers are refused when they do not fit.
- A field limited to categories is skipped on assets in other categories.
- Archived assets are refused, like every other bulk edit.
- Each changed asset gets the single edit's note and one
ASSET_CUSTOM_FIELD_CHANGED event, written in one transaction.
- The toast says what changed and why the rest were left alone.
- The dialog lists fields from a GET on the same route, only while open,
and every opening starts with no field and the only-empty mode.
- The assets and their values are read inside the transaction, under the
archive lock, so a value saved or an asset archived meanwhile is seen
before anything is written (no duplicate value rows).
- Replace updates every stored row for the field by asset, not just the first.
- A value that does not fit names the real field and is not sent to Sentry.
- Route tests pin the GET payload the dialog reads and the POST parsing.
This incremental diff adds assertAssetsBelongToOrg inside the transaction guard for bulkSetAssetCustomField, which is a positive security change that prevents cross-org IDOR attacks on foreign asset IDs. The other changes are: splitting NUMBER/AMOUNT input cases to attach a client-side min={0} to AMOUNT (consistent with the existing asset form at custom-fields-inputs.tsx:176 and form.tsx:1004), removing allowBodyOverflow from the dialog, and fixing singular/plural grammar in toast messages. No new vulnerabilities were found.

Transactional updates and change records apps/webapp/app/modules/asset/bulk-custom-field.server.ts, apps/webapp/app/modules/asset/bulk-custom-field.server.test.ts
Resolves selected assets and updates eligible values in a transaction. Records asset events and notes, and returns changed and skipped counts. Tests cover update modes, category restrictions, archive locking, timestamps, and result messages.
Permission-checked route and notifications apps/webapp/app/routes/api+/assets.bulk-update-custom-field.ts, apps/webapp/test/routes-tests/api.assets.bulk-update-custom-field.test.ts
Adds permission-checked field loading and update submission. The action passes selection and access parameters, sends a result notification, and returns status-bearing errors.
Dialog and asset-menu integration apps/webapp/app/components/assets/bulk-custom-field-update-dialog.tsx, apps/webapp/app/components/assets/bulk-custom-field-update-dialog.test.tsx, apps/webapp/app/components/assets/bulk-actions-dropdown.tsx, apps/webapp/app/components/bulk-update-dialog/bulk-update-dialog.tsx, apps/webapp/app/atoms/bulk-update-dialog.ts, apps/webapp/app/components/shared/icons-map.tsx
Adds the dialog, field-type-specific inputs, update-mode selection, and the “Set custom field” menu action. The action is disabled for archived selections or while a form is processing. Dialog tests cover field options and the initial update mode.
Shelf-nu/shelf.nu#3255: Proposes the bulk “Set custom field” action. This change adds the action and update modes, but does not add model defaults or model-assignment behavior.

- Pass the caller's bookableScope to select-all resolution, which main now
requires; this restores the TypeScript build.
- Refuse a yes/no value that is not "on" or "off" instead of storing "No",
and mark the dialog's value picker required.
- Write all notes in one note.createMany, so a Replace over many distinct
previous values no longer runs two queries per value inside the
15s transaction.
- Move Asset.updatedAt on the assets that changed.
- Use a neutral toast icon when nothing changed.
Tests: field types in the spelling the dialog posts, event meta, the empty
selection, an uncategorised asset, the asset:update gate and its 403,
malformed POSTs, select-all forwarding, and a dialog test that reads the
GET payload shape the route test pins.
- Refuse the whole request when a selected id is missing or in another
workspace (assertAssetsBelongToOrg inside the transaction), instead of
dropping it and reporting a partial result.
- Bound an amount value at zero in the dialog, like the asset form; a
number field stays unbounded.
- Keep the dialog body scrollable: it has no inline popover that needs
allowBodyOverflow, so Confirm stays reachable on short screens.
- Agree the toast's verb and pronoun with the count ("1 asset was ...").
The render-time reset in bulk-custom-field-update-dialog.tsx clears the selected field and returns the mode to only-empty each time the dialog opens. No test exercises that reset. The only mode test renders once and reads the default. Removing the reset block would leave every test in the file passing. A regression would let a previously chosen "Replace their value" carry into the next batch, and replace mode overwrites existing values on every selected asset.
