WHY are these changes introduced?

store execute drops response-level GraphQL extensions on both success and failure, so scripts cannot read cost.throttleStatus to pace requests. Follow-up to this discussion.

Depends on #8405's structured error details and sits above #8443 in the existing stack.

WHAT is this pull request doing?

Returns successful operations as {data, extensions} and includes response metadata in error.details.extensions for GraphQL failures. Extensions are omitted when the API does not return them.

Breaking change: successful query data moves under data (for example, .shop becomes .data.shop), including in output files. This keeps metadata separate from query fields or aliases named extensions. Includes a major changeset.

Regression coverage checks cost metadata, missing and empty extensions, query aliases, JSON errors, stdout, and output files. The 69 focused tests, store type check, and lint checks pass.

How to manually test your changes?

pnpm shopify store execute --store "$STORE" --query 'query { shop { name } }' --json
pnpm shopify store execute --store "$STORE" --query 'query { extensions: shop { name } }' --json
pnpm shopify store execute --store "$STORE" --query 'query { shop { name } }' --output-file ./result.json
pnpm shopify store execute --store "$STORE" --query 'query { nope }' --json

Checklist

  • I've considered possible cross-platform impacts (Mac, Linux, Windows)
  • I've considered possible documentation changes
  • I've considered analytics changes to measure impact
  • The change is user-facing — I've identified the correct bump type (major) and added a changeset

Differences in type declarations

We detected differences in the type declarations generated by Typescript for this branch compared to the baseline ('main' branch). Please, review them to ensure they are backward-compatible. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Some seemingly private modules might be re-exported through public modules.
  • If the branch is behind main you might see odd diffs, rebase main into this branch.
