Note

This is PR 2 of 3 in a stacked series. It depends on #43 and should be reviewed against that PR.

Summary

Explicitly registered module instances can share the same Python forward frame while requiring independent TorchDynamo compilation routes.

With enough registered instances, backend candidates, or graph-break checks, these routes can exceed TorchDynamo's default per-frame recompile limits. This PR reserves sufficient TorchDynamo capacity for the lifetime of an explicit JIT tuning session.

What changed

  • Temporarily raises supported TorchDynamo cache and recompile limits for explicit JIT registrations.
  • Sizes the reservation using:
    • the number of registered module/graph routes
    • the number of configured backend candidates
    • optional graph-break detection
    • the selected post-tuning inference route
  • Keeps capacity reserved until every selected JIT route completes its first successful inference, covering lazy compilation.
  • Releases capacity:
    • after AOT-only tuning
    • when tuning fails
    • after every selected JIT route runs successfully
    • during jit_reset()
  • Supports multiple active registration owners and restores limits only after all owners release them.
  • Preserves higher limits and changes made by other code while the reservation is active.
  • Handles TorchDynamo limit fields that vary between PyTorch versions.
  • Adds route resolution to TunedModule so capacity is released only after the corresponding compiled route succeeds.
  • Leaves automatic JIT discovery and dry-run behavior unchanged.

Compatibility

The reservation temporarily changes process-wide TorchDynamo configuration, but only for explicit registrations introduced by #43.

Existing higher limits are not reduced, externally updated values are preserved, and every cleanup or failure path restores the values still owned by AITune.

Testing

Added focused coverage for:

  • reservation sizing and monotonic growth
  • multiple active owners
  • restoration and reset behavior
  • failure and retry behavior
  • lazy compilation across multiple recorded routes
  • external limit changes
  • compatibility with available PyTorch limit fields
  • exclusion of automatic JIT and dry-run paths
  • graph-break detection, backend compilation, and post-tuning inference
  • TunedModule route selection

Published validation at b1387d0:

Additional local stacked validation:

  • 318 focused CPU unit tests passed; 40 tests skipped in the CPU import-only GPU-dependency harness
  • 7 mixed-call collation cases from latest main passed
  • repository pre-commit checks passed on all 8 changed Python files
  • targeted Pytype 2024.10.11 checks passed on the 3 JIT test files and the backend/module helper files using Python 3.12 on macOS

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Explicit JIT tuning now manages TorchDynamo recompilation capacity based on registered routes and backend settings. For JIT routes, reservations are released after each route completes its first successful inference.
    • Added a way to identify the selected backend route for inference inputs.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reset and tuning failures now restore reserved capacity while preserving limit changes made by other code.
  • Documentation
    • Documented recompilation-capacity behavior, including how limits are restored after tuning or reset.

Explicit JIT targets reserve TorchDynamo recompilation capacity based on route and backend counts. Reservations remain active until required JIT routes complete or JIT reset restores the limits. Route tracking, reservation behavior, and cleanup are covered by tests.

Dynamo Recompile Capacity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capacity sizing and reservation state
aitune/torch/jit/dynamo.py, tests/unit/torch/jit/test_dynamo.py
Adds capacity calculation and a session manager that raises supported Dynamo limits as needed. The manager tracks owners and restores limits when reservations end, while preserving external limit changes.
Explicit route tracking and release
aitune/torch/jit/patcher.py, aitune/torch/jit/patched_module.py, aitune/torch/module/tuned_module.py, tests/unit/torch/jit/test_dynamo.py, tests/unit/torch/module/test_tuned_module.py
Tracks explicit routes and pending JIT runtime routes. Eligible tuning reserves capacity, and successful forwards mark routes complete. Capacity is released when all pending routes complete.
Reset and failure cleanup
aitune/torch/jit/patcher.py, tests/unit/torch/jit/test_dynamo.py, docs/guides/jit_tuning.md
JIT reset clears explicit route counts and restores Dynamo limits. Tests cover cleanup when report finalization or partial unpatching fails, and verify that a cached forward from an earlier session does not release a later reservation. The guide describes reservation and release behavior.

Standard strategy capacity sizing is corrected, but custom strategies that add candidates during configuration may still exceed Dynamo limits. Address that case or accept the bounded risk before merging.

518-521: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Skip route resolution when no Dynamo routes remain pending.

_forward_tuned is the hot inference path. It now calls route_for_inputs on every call for every tuned module. This includes automatic modules and explicit targets that already released their reservation. safe_call_backend already builds SampleMetadata once, so each call now builds it twice. Each call also takes the capacity lock through release_dynamo_recompile_capacity. Track routes only while _pending_dynamo_runtime_routes is non-empty.

⚡ Proposed fix
- route = self._wrapper.route_for_inputs(args, kwargs) if isinstance(self._wrapper, TunedModule) else None
- result = self._wrapper(*args, **kwargs)
- self._mark_dynamo_runtime_route_complete(route)
- return result
+ if not self._pending_dynamo_runtime_routes:
+ return self._wrapper(*args, **kwargs)
+ route = self._wrapper.route_for_inputs(args, kwargs) if isinstance(self._wrapper, TunedModule) else None
+ result = self._wrapper(*args, **kwargs)
+ self._mark_dynamo_runtime_route_complete(route)
+ return result

With this change, test_first_successful_tuned_inference_releases_target_capacity must set a pending route before the call.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Configure each strategy only once per tuning call.

_build_strategy() now calls _configure_for_module(module) before sizing the reservation. TuneStrategy.tune() calls the same method again on that strategy. If a custom strategy appends module-specific backend candidates, a single-graph tune evaluates duplicated candidates and can exceed the capacity calculated from the first call. Configure a separate copy for capacity sizing, or let tuning reuse the prepared configuration without calling the method again. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

question: seems we change dynamo config limits and release them. What happens if there is another part of a pipeline which is compiled outside ai-tune by a user or a framework like vllm? Wouldn't the original limits kick in?

Perhaps we could simplify the whole solution just by bumping limits each time there is a tuning (for torch inductor like backends) and leave the limits (which would grow over time i.e. you can think of it as high watermark thing) - so that anything that happens outside ai-tune also compiles. WDYT?
