Looking for a robust FOSS alternative to Mathpix Snip Pro for scientific PDFs (on Intel Mac) #208
I am looking for a completely free, open-source alternative to Mathpix Snip Pro that can process academic and scientific PDFs locally or via a stable Python script.
My ideal workflow involves:
Extracting complex mathematical formulas (converting them into LaTeX format) alongside text from a PDF.
Translating the English text into Italian.
Exporting everything into a native Microsoft Word (.docx) document where equations remain fully editable.
I have already experimented with Nougat and pdfplumber, but I often face environment, dependency, or rendering issues on specific hardware (such as Intel-based Macs).
Has anyone successfully built a complete tool, script, or pipeline that achieves this end-to-end without the strict page-count limitations of proprietary services? Any recommendations on existing repositories, custom wrappers, or active projects would be greatly appreciated!
