Description of change

This refactor modernizes event publishing and decouples persistence from domain logic:

  • Event publishers as background workers: Replaced the old forwarder functions with HttpEventPublisher and NatsEventPublisher structs. They can be created directly from config, run in their own background tasks via .spawn(), and dispatch HTTP requests with timeouts so slow webhooks don't block the event bus.
  • Moved state setup to domain crates: State setup functions (*_state) now live in their own domain crates (agent_identity, agent_issuance, etc.) instead of inside agent_store. Each domain now sets up its own aggregates and projections using a shared CqrsComponentBuilder trait.
  • Made agent_store domain-agnostic: Removed all domain dependencies from agent_store so it works purely as a generic database layer. The hardcoded aggregate lists for event verification were moved to agent_application, so agent_store can now verify any list of aggregates passed to it.

This refactor untangles our dependencies and makes the event pipeline much easier to maintain. Event publishers are now completely domain-agnostic: instead of hardcoding publishers to specific aggregates, they simply attach directly to the shared EventBus stream and forward standard CloudEvents in the background. At the same time, moving state setup out of agent_store and into the domain crates turns agent_store into a purely generic database layer. This breaks the tight coupling between storage and domain logic.

⚠️ This contains breaking changes of which some of them will be 're-broken' in the PR stacked on top of this PR. Therefore it's best to have their combined changes merged simultaneously into beta. #423 will also include a migration guide that describes how to mitigate these changes.

BREAKING CHANGE:

  • Event publisher config: Replaced typed event enums with string lists (events.types: [...]), removing pre-runtime schema type-checking for event names.
  • HTTP event publisher: Now dispatches payloads in CloudEvent v1.0 JSON format instead of legacy raw event JSON.
  • NATS event publisher: CloudEvent type changed from offer.event.<name> to com.impierce.unicore.<name-kebab>, source changed from the application URL to /services/<aggregate>, and id changed from {aggregate_id}-{uuid} to {aggregate_type}:{aggregate_id}:{sequence}. Also, the outer Rust enum variant wrapper ({"TxCodeGenerated": { ... }}) is now unwrapped to the inner object directly ({ ... }).

How the change has been tested

Describe the tests that you ran to verify your changes.
Make sure to provide instructions for the maintainer as well as any relevant configurations.

  • Unit tests: Added tests for HttpEventPublisher (using wiremock for dispatch, filtering, and timeouts) and NatsEventPublisher (connection lifecycle and publishing).
  • Regression testing: Verified that all existing unit, integration, and route tests pass across _core/ssi-agent and ssi-agent-ext.
  • Lints: Verified clean compilation via cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change moves CQRS state construction into domain crates and routes configured HTTP and NATS publishers through a shared event bus. Event selections use a shared types list. Application startup and test setup use the domain constructors and updated event configuration.

Changes

Shared event-bus architecture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared builder and domain state constructors
agent_shared/src/application_state.rs, agent_authorization/src/state.rs, agent_holder/src/state.rs, agent_identity/src/state.rs, agent_issuance/src/state.rs, agent_library/src/state.rs, agent_verification/src/state.rs, domain crate src/lib.rs files
A shared CqrsComponentBuilder constructs command handlers and view repositories. Each domain crate adds and exports a state constructor that uses the builder and event bus.
Store query handling and event verification
agent_store/src/lib.rs, agent_store/src/in_memory.rs, agent_store/src/mongodb.rs, agent_store/src/postgres.rs, agent_store/src/event_verification.rs, agent_application/src/event_verification.rs, agent_issuance/src/lib.rs
Store builders accept custom queries. The core verifier registry is provided by agent_application; store convenience methods that use the core registry are removed. SimpleLoggingQuery is defined in agent_store.
Event configuration and publisher delivery
agent_shared/src/config/mod.rs, agent_shared/tests/*, agent_application/example.config.yaml, agent_event_publisher_http/*, agent_event_publisher_nats/*, shared-kernel/src/event_bus.rs, docs/adr/*
Event filters use a shared types list. HTTP and NATS publishers subscribe to the event bus and forward matching CloudEvents to configured endpoints or subjects. The event bus filter no longer excludes internal events before applying configured criteria. An ADR describes lag handling and delivery limits.
Application startup and storage wiring
agent_application/src/lib.rs
Startup creates HTTP and NATS publishers from shared configuration and the event bus. PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and in-memory setup call domain-local constructors without publisher lists.
API and domain test constructor migration
agent_api_http/src/*, agent_holder/src/offer/aggregate.rs, agent_identity/tests/*, agent_issuance/src/application/*, agent_issuance/tests/*
Tests import state constructors from their owning crates and use the updated constructor arguments. Selected tests configure event publishers through the event bus.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2f458

Internal events can reach SSE clients, and bursts can accumulate webhook requests. Address those risks before merging; the asynchronous delivery test also remains timing-sensitive.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2f458

The shared event pipeline removes an existing restriction on internal events and loses aggregate-specific destination filtering. This can expose additional event data to stream clients or configured recipients. Deployed access controls and recipient configurations determine the effective exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Removing the global internal-caller exclusion broadens SSE visibility without replacing the control at the API boundary. Both catch-up serialization and live forwarding lack an internal-event check. Default application wiring uses AllowAllAuthorizationChecker and optional actor extraction, so callers reaching the default events route can receive formerly excluded internal event data. External access restrictions and the sensitivity of deployed internal events remain unverified.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The flattened events.types configuration cannot preserve the former aggregate-specific recipient scope. Publishers match only event type, while CloudEvent types omit the aggregate namespace. For example, DescriptionUpdated matches both profile and template events, allowing a destination intended for one aggregate to receive the other's payload. The routing ambiguity is demonstrated in source; actual unintended disclosure depends on deployed destination selections.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The visibility change affects the shared application bus across domain aggregates, not merely one webhook or one credential. A default SSE request can select the broad feed; configured outbound exposure is limited by enabled recipients and nonempty matching type lists. Cross-tenant, cross-environment, and internet reachability were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to reach the default events endpoint can omit narrowing filters and receive internal-provenance CloudEvents that the base rejected. No event-production privilege is required to observe those events. Deployment-level restrictions and disclosure of particular sensitive internal fields remain unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Outbound URLs, headers, NATS connection details, and event selections come from application configuration. The inspected publisher path does not let an event payload choose its destination. Disabled HTTP recipients and empty type selections suppress forwarding, but source and caller provenance are not enforced as recipient boundaries.
  • observed — Configured event payloads can contain sensitive data, including holder credential JWTs. Base aggregate-specific HTTP publishing already serialized matching event payloads without caller filtering, so this capability alone is not attributed to the PR. The introduced concerns are broader subscriber visibility and loss of aggregate-specific recipient selection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Subscriber loss and unsupervised task termination cannot be treated as authoritative delivery of security state. The documented best-effort contract bounds that expectation; no inspected deployment evidence establishes that authorization, revocation, or audit enforcement depends on successful outbound delivery.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate internal publisher visibility from external stream visibility, and preserve recipient scope using source-plus-type selectors or aggregate-qualified event types. This would allow internal processing without widening the public feed or conflating identically named events.
  • proposed — Bound outstanding HTTP requests and retain publisher lifecycle ownership for supervision and shutdown. Treat request accumulation as an existing hardening opportunity, not a newly introduced defect. Require durable delivery only where a downstream security guarantee actually depends on it.

Place tokio-stream in the sorted external dependency block.

Both manifests put the external dependency before the required blank line and out of alphabetical order. Place it after tokio in each list. This corrects the stated Cargo.toml style requirement; the supplied evidence establishes no build or check failure.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replace the fixed sleep with a polling wait.

The test sleeps 100 ms with std::thread::sleep and then asserts one received request. The publisher now dispatches in a background task. Slow CI can miss the 100 ms window, so the test can fail intermittently. Poll received_requests() with a timeout instead.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A NATS connect failure at startup disables publishing permanently.

If NATS is unreachable when the task starts, run returns. The process keeps running, but it never publishes to NATS again. The JoinHandle is discarded in agent_application/src/lib.rs Lines 147-149, so the only signal is one error log. The old implementation published through a client that was loaded at startup. With this change, a transient outage during deploy silently stops all NATS delivery, including email commands. Retry the connection with backoff, or use ConnectOptions::retry_on_initial_connect().

Previously if NATS was unreachable it would make startup fail (EventPublisherNats::load().await.unwrap() in agent_application), now it's just logged but not retried. I think either we make sure to retry connecting to NATS or fail startup like before.

Thanks! this is now solved in this commit. I also manually verified the fix by running an instance using:

# config.yaml
  nats:
    enabled: true
    nats_url: "nats://127.0.0.1:4222"
    subjects:
      - name: "unicore.events"
        events:
          types:
            - ManagedEcosystemCreated

without an actual NATS receiver running which results in:

Right now if the events list in config happens to be empty, it skips the whole checkso nothing rejects the event. As far as I understand this means there's no filter, so an empty config by mistake would send everything off. Maybe it would be wise to add a warning here when types is empty?

Keep the publisher JoinHandles or supervise them.

Startup discards both handles. If a publisher task panics or exits, nothing observes it, and event forwarding stops while the service keeps running. Store the handles in ApplicationState, or spawn a watcher that logs task termination at error level.

Based on learnings: "spawned tasks should have clear ownership and lifetimes (e.g., via JoinHandles, scopes, or supervisors) rather than being detached indefinitely."

🟠 Major · Filter internal events at both SSE delivery paths. · mod.rs:157-175

agent_api_http/src/v0/events/mod.rs:157-175
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Filter internal events at both SSE delivery paths.

EventFilter::matches no longer excludes callertype == "internal". events_sse_handler uses that filter for both event_bus.subscribe(...) and history_ascending(...), then serializes both results. Internal commands preserve this metadata when they publish events. The application constructs this route with EventsState::from(event_bus), whose default checker is AllowAllAuthorizationChecker.

A client can therefore receive internal events through live and catch-up SSE. Apply the exclusion only in this route so internal event publishing remains available elsewhere.

Exclude internal events at the SSE boundary.

EventFilter::matches now accepts events with callertype == "internal". The /v0/events handler builds its filter from public query parameters and passes it to both subscribe and history_ascending. A broad request therefore can stream internal CloudEvents to callers authorized for events.stream. The deleted SSE test preserved the previous privacy contract.

Keep the shared filter change for configured HTTP and NATS publishers, which also subscribe with EventFilter::default(). Filter internal events in both SSE catch-up and live output instead.

Limit concurrent webhook requests.

The request timeout limits each request after send() starts. It does not limit the number of detached Tokio tasks. The loop creates one task for every matching event and target, with no application-level concurrency bound. A burst can therefore accumulate enough tasks and request resources to degrade availability before requests time out.

Add a per-publisher concurrency limit. Acquire capacity before spawning and log and drop the event when the limit is full. This preserves the documented best-effort behavior without creating an unbounded queue.
