Pape Barka

Software Engineer · Software Architect · Product Engineer · Technical Consultant

I design, architect, and build reliable digital products and complex software systems for organizations worldwide.

I have 10+ years of software-engineering experience, including approximately 5 years in commercial-banking technology, with professional work spanning financial systems, enterprise applications, workflow automation, regulatory reporting, public-sector digitalization, product engineering, and technical consulting.

My work sits at the intersection of engineering, architecture, product, business, and digital transformation.

I am particularly interested in systems where domain complexity, correctness, auditability, reliability, usability, and measurable outcomes matter.

What I do

  • Software engineering and product engineering
  • Software architecture and system design
  • Technical strategy and consulting
  • Enterprise application engineering
  • Digital transformation and architecture modernization
  • Workflow and process automation
  • Data-intensive and integration-heavy systems
  • Product discovery through production delivery

Domains & markets

Financial Services

Banking · FinTech · Payments · InsurTech · Lending · RegTech · Digital Finance · Financial Infrastructure

My strongest production experience within this space is commercial banking, including financial workflows, regulatory reporting, data extraction, automation, controls, and enterprise integrations.

GovTech

Digital Public Services · Revenue Collection · Municipal Systems · Government Platforms · Citizen Services

My experience includes multi-tenant municipal revenue systems built for real operational environments.

Enterprise Technology

Enterprise Applications · Workflow Automation · System Integration · Architecture Modernization · Internal Platforms

Startups, SMEs & Digital Businesses

Product Engineering · MVP-to-Scale Architecture · SaaS · Technical Strategy · Business Digitalization · Payments · Operational Automation

Consumer / B2C Products

Self-Service Journeys · Digital Channels · Web/Mobile Products · Marketplaces · Payments · Product Experience

How I think about engineering

Good software is more than code that works.

I care about:

  • clear domain models
  • explicit business rules
  • maintainable boundaries
  • correctness and auditability
  • security and authorization
  • testability
  • operational visibility
  • failure and recovery design
  • evolutionary architecture
  • usability
  • measurable business outcomes

I prefer engineering decisions that can be explained in terms of the problem they solve, the constraints they respect, and the trade-offs they introduce.

Selected experience

My professional work has included:

  • software engineering inside commercial banking
  • regulatory-reporting systems and financial-data workflows
  • SQL-based operational and analytical data extraction
  • enterprise workflow and automation systems
  • software architecture and technical advisory
  • product engineering and UX/interaction-design collaboration
  • multi-tenant municipal revenue-collection platforms deployed in multiple African markets

Much of my production work belongs to employers and clients and cannot be published directly. This GitHub therefore focuses on sanitized reference implementations, architecture case studies, engineering laboratories, and technical writing inspired by the classes of problems I work on.

Core engineering toolkit

Primary
Ruby · Ruby on Rails · PostgreSQL · SQL · Hotwire · RSpec · JS · Python · Kotlin · Swift · Linux · Git

Architecture & Engineering
Domain Modeling · DDD · Modular Systems · APIs · Messaging · Event-Driven Systems · Distributed Systems · TDD · CI/CD · Observability

Currently deepening
F# · .NET · OCaml · Rust · Go · Functional Programming · Formal Methods · Advanced Distributed Systems

The objective is not technology collection. It is to develop better ways of reasoning about correctness, concurrency, domain modeling, performance, reliability, and complex systems.

Building in public

My public engineering work is organized around six themes:

  1. enterprise Rails architecture
  2. financial systems
  3. digital products
  4. GovTech platforms
  5. architecture and engineering writing
  6. cross-language engineering laboratories

The repositories below are being curated to emphasize complete engineering work: problem framing, architecture, implementation, testing, security, observability, documentation, and trade-offs.

Collaboration

I am interested in serious engineering, architecture, product, and advisory work with financial institutions, governments, enterprises, startups, founders, SMEs, technology companies, and product teams.

Based in West Africa. Open to projects, partnerships, and opportunities worldwide.
