ci: Run the MSRV job on 1.85.0, not the pinned 1.97.0 - #61
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe workspace minimum supported Rust version is raised from 1.85.0 to 1.95.0. The MSRV CI job selects and verifies Rust 1.95.0. The README reflects the updated requirement. Crate code adopts equivalent ChangesRust 1.95.0 MSRV and syntax modernization
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR makes the MSRV job enforce Rust 1.95.0 and updates affected Rust syntax; one localized edge case in decode.rs may report the wrong error for malformed zero-sized datatype metadata, so merge is reasonable with explicit owner awareness or a small follow-up fix. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Full details: Title checkExplanation The title is misleading because the pull request changes the MSRV job and workspace MSRV to Rust 1.95.0, not Rust 1.85.0. It also references a pinned Rust 1.97.0 target that is not the resulting configuration. Full details: Docstring CoverageExplanation Docstring coverage is 93.55% which is sufficient. dtolnay/rust-toolchain installs 1.85.0 and sets it as the rustup default, but the committed rust-toolchain.toml (1.97.0) outranks a default, so the `msrv` job compiled with 1.97.0 and the rust-version floor was never exercised. RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN outranks the file; a `rustc --version` step records what the job verified. Refs: ATLAS-MSRV-JOBS-OVERRIDDEN-2026-09-02 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The MSRV job's first runs at the declared floor fail consus-mat and consus-zarr with E0658: let chains (stable 1.88) and `if let` guards on match arms (stable 1.95.0, rust-lang/rust#141295). The floor had never been exercised (the job compiled with the pinned 1.97.0), so the 1.85.0 claim was fiction; 1.95.0 is what the code compiles on, and the README badge and toolchain line follow. Raising an MSRV is a minor change under the Unreleased convention, not a release. Refs: ATLAS-MSRV-JOBS-OVERRIDDEN-2026-09-02 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Raising rust-version to 1.95.0 un-gates clippy's MSRV-aware manual_is_multiple_of (the API is stable since 1.87), and the two `len % size != 0` sites decode.rs had written around the old 1.85 floor fail `-D warnings`. decode_to_f64 takes the idiomatic form; decode_bytes_to_f64 keeps its zero guard, since `is_multiple_of(0)` would turn the `UnsupportedFeature` path into `InvalidFormat`. consus-parquet's `is_group` becomes `const fn` (`Vec::is_empty` is const since 1.87) and consus-zarr's byte-swap length check uses `is_multiple_of`, keeping the explicit zero-size rejection. Both carried comments naming the 1.85 floor they worked around; with rust-version at 1.95.0 those are the sites clippy's MSRV-aware lints reach next. With rust-version at 1.95.0 clippy's collapsible_if reaches the nested
`if let … { if … }` in decode_to_f64 (let chains are stable since 1.88;
the old 1.85 floor had suppressed the lint).

Clippy's MSRV-aware manual_is_multiple_of enumerates one package per CI cell; a tree-wide search finds the rest at once: consus-compression (nbit, shuffle), consus-fits (record and card lengths), consus-hdf5 (chunk offset, global heap), consus-python (netcdf), consus (sync). All operands are unsigned lengths and offsets. Refs: ATLAS-MSRV-JOBS-OVERRIDDEN-2026-09-02 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With rust-version at 1.95.0, clippy's MSRV-aware lints reach the code written around the old 1.85 floor: nine more `% n == 0` sites take `is_multiple_of` and nested `if let` blocks collapse into let chains (consus-mat, consus-hdf5, consus-zarr, consus). Applied with `cargo clippy --fix` over the whole workspace so CI stops enumerating one package per run, then rustfmt. consus-netcdf keeps its nested `if let` as authored: the crate-level expectation records that they read clearer un-collapsed. Which lint clippy raises for a nesting follows the floor — below 1.88 every one was `collapsible_match`, with let chains available most become `collapsible_if` — so the expectation names both. Rust stable usize::is_multiple_of(0) behavior non-empty value documentation
💡 Result:
In Rust, the stable is_multiple_of method available for unsigned integer types (including usize) determines if a number is a multiple of another [1][2]. Unlike the standard remainder operator (%), which panics if the divisor is zero, is_multiple_of is designed to handle a zero divisor safely [1][3]. The behavior for is_multiple_of(0) is defined as follows [1][2]: * 0.is_multiple_of(0) returns true [1][3]. * For any non-zero value n, n.is_multiple_of(0) returns false [1][3]. This functionality is effectively equivalent to self % rhs == 0 for all non-zero divisors, but it avoids the panic that would otherwise occur when the divisor is zero [1][2]. The method was stabilized in the Rust standard library specifically to provide this safe, idiomatic way to check for multiples [1][2].

Skip divisibility validation when Datatype::element_size() returns zero.
Because Datatype exposes bit and size fields, malformed values can produce Some(0). For a non-empty buffer, is_multiple_of(0) returns false, so decode_to_f64 returns InvalidFormat before its UnsupportedFeature branch. Add size != 0 before calling is_multiple_of.

High-level PR Summary
Fixes the MSRV (Minimum Supported Rust Version) CI job to actually test against Rust 1.85.0 instead of inadvertently using the pinned 1.97.0 version from
rust-toolchain.toml. The fix adds theRUSTUP_TOOLCHAINenvironment variable to the job (which takes precedence over the toolchain file) and includes a verification step that prints the active Rust version to confirm the correct toolchain is being tested.⏱️ Estimated Review Time: 5-15 minutes
