Reviewer's GuideThe PR makes release-channel pointers monotonic by comparing target and current release creation timestamps in both publish and pointer endpoints, while preserving same-version and rollout-only updates. Rollbacks must now be published as new versions, with documentation and tests updated accordingly. Sequence diagram for monotonic release pointer updatessequenceDiagram

<code_context>
if (!release) return fail(c, 404, `version ${version} was never published under ${appId}/${pkg}/${hostVersion}`);
const rollout = parseRollout(body?.["rollout"], current && current.version === version ? current.rollout : 100);
if (rollout === null) return fail(c, 400, "rollout must be an integer from 0 to 100");
+ const backwards = await movesBack(storage, appId, pkg, hostVersion, current, version, release.createdAt);
+ if (backwards) return fail(c, 409, backwards);
const pointer: PointerDoc = { version, rollout, signature: release.signature };
await storage.putDoc(docKeys.pointer(appId, pkg, hostVersion, channel), pointer);
return c.json(pointer);
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** The check and subsequent pointer write are not atomic. Two concurrent publish or promotion requests can both read the same current pointer, pass `movesBack`, and then write in reverse order, leaving the channel pointing at an older version.
**Triggers:** When two newer versions are published or promoted concurrently to the same channel and the request for the older of those versions writes last.
**Suggested fix:** Use a conditional/compare-and-swap pointer update, or serialize pointer updates per channel and re-read the pointer immediately before writing.
</issue_to_address>

+async function movesBack(storage: Storage, app: string, pkg: string, hostVersion: string, current: PointerDoc | null, version: string, createdAt: string): Promise<string | null> {
+ if (!current || current.version === version) return null;
+ const at = await storage.getDoc<ReleaseRecord>(docKeys.release(app, pkg, hostVersion, current.version));
+ if (!at || createdAt > at.createdAt) return null;
+ return `the channel is at ${current.version} (${at.createdAt}); ${version} (${createdAt}) is not newer. Pointers only move forward: publish the old content as a new version`;
+}
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** `movesBack` orders releases with a raw string comparison even though `parseManifest` accepts any non-empty `createdAt` string. Non-canonical timestamps such as differently padded dates or offset forms are ordered lexicographically rather than chronologically, so an actually older release can be accepted or an actually newer release can be rejected.
**Triggers:** When a signed manifest uses a valid but non-canonical or differently formatted timestamp.
**Suggested fix:** Validate `createdAt` as a canonical timestamp when parsing the manifest, then compare parsed epoch values rather than strings.
</issue_to_address>Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 2 findings to address first, and this changes release-control policy by rejecting publication or promotion to any release with an older creation timestamp, so an incorrect decision can leave a bad production version active without the intended rollback path and contribute to an outage. Reverting restores the old behavior, but any pointer already advanced must still be corrected afterward.

In `@src/app.ts`:
- Around line 317-319: Make the forward-only check atomic with the pointer
write: update the pointer through a conditional storage operation that
revalidates the stored version at write time, or serialize pointer updates per
channel. Apply this to both routes that call storage.putDoc, including the
unchanged-version exception, so a stale check cannot overwrite a newer pointer.
- Line 319: Update the createdAt comparison in the channel timestamp guard to
compare parsed timestamp instants rather than raw strings, so offset timestamps
are ordered by actual time and older timestamps cannot move the channel
backward.

calendar dates and times, not just strings matching the timestamp shape, before
movesBack compares values lexicographically. Preserve the required UTC timestamp
format and ensure only valid timestamps proceed.
