fix(openai): record gen_ai.request.seed, stop_sequences and output.type - #4548
If adding a new instrumentation or changing an existing one, I've added screenshots from some observability platform showing the change. (No screenshots: the assertions are span-level attribute checks in the new offline test, and no instrumentation surface beyond span attributes changes.)
PR name follows conventional commits format: feat(instrumentation): ... or fix(instrumentation): ....
(If applicable) I have updated the documentation accordingly. (Not applicable: no new attribute surface is documented per-package.)
What was wrong
The OpenAI instrumentation records sampling parameters such as gen_ai.request.temperature, but silently dropped three request attributes defined by the OTel GenAI semantic conventions:
Request parameter
Semconv attribute
Requirement level
Recorded?
seed
gen_ai.request.seed
Conditionally Required
no
stop
gen_ai.request.stop_sequences
Recommended
no
response_format
gen_ai.output.type
Conditionally Required
no
No other attribute carried these values, so they were lost from the trace entirely. Reproduced on main (be498301c, 0.62.4) with the mock-transport script in #4538.
This breaks reproducibility. A trace cannot be replayed faithfully, because a request that pinned a seed or asked for JSON output is indistinguishable from one that did not — a replayed response_format request returns free text instead of JSON.
For comparison, opentelemetry-instrumentation-genai-openai already records all three on the same script.
Fix
All three attributes already exist in the pinned opentelemetry-semantic-conventions (I verified this against the resolved 0.63b1 wheel in uv.lock, not just against main), so no semconv change is needed.
The change is additive and confined to the shared _set_request_attributes in shared/__init__.py, which every wrapper already calls — so chat completions, legacy completions, embeddings and the Responses API all pick it up with no wrapper-level change.
seed is read straight from kwargs, next to temperature and top_p.
stop goes through a new _normalize_stop_sequences() helper. The SDK accepts either a single string or a list, while the semconv attribute is a sequence, so a bare "END" is normalized to ("END",).
gen_ai.output.type is derived by a new _output_type_from_response_format() helper, hooked into the pre-existing if response_format := block: json_schema / json_object / a pydantic model map to "json", text maps to "text".
The attributes are emitted only when the caller actually sets the corresponding parameter, so spans for requests that do not use them are unchanged.
The Responses API needs nothing here: it has no seed or stop, and expresses output format as text.format rather than response_format.
Tests
New tests/traces/test_request_sampling_attributes.py — 8 tests, all against an in-process httpx.MockTransport, so no API key and no recorded cassette is needed:
the issue's exact repro, asserting all three attributes land alongside a still-working temperature
the async counterpart
stop as a bare string, normalized to a one-element sequence
seed=0, which is falsy but meaningful and must not be dropped
all three response_format variants (text, json_object, json_schema) and a pydantic model
all three attributes absent from the span when the parameters are not set
Verification
All of this has actually been run:
$ uv run --frozen --group dev --group test pytest tests/traces/test_request_sampling_attributes.py -v
14 passed in 1.52s
$ uv run --frozen --group dev --group test pytest tests/ -q
305 passed, 1 skipped in 21.09s
$ uv run --frozen --group dev ruff check <both files>
All checks passed!
The full package suite is green, so the change to the shared _set_request_attributes — which every chat / completions / embeddings / Responses wrapper calls — regresses nothing.
On formatting: ruff format --check does flag both files, but it is not enforced here and the disagreement is pre-existing repo-wide (14 of 18 files under opentelemetry/ are already non-conforming, including code this PR does not touch). pyproject.toml sets line-length = 120 while the existing code is hand-wrapped at ~88, and CI has no ruff format step — only [tool.ruff.lint] select = ["E", "F", "W"], which passes. I matched the surrounding hand-wrapped style rather than reformatting and adding unrelated churn.
Earlier revisions of this PR said the suite could not be executed locally; that was true when written, and is no longer — uv has since been installed, so the numbers above are from real runs.
Note on a separate issue
While working in this file I noticed v1/realtime_wrappers.py:130 sets GEN_AI_OUTPUT_TYPE to json.dumps(session.modalities) — a JSON array, which violates the text | json | image | speech enum for that attribute. That looks like a genuine pre-existing bug but it is unrelated to this PR, so I have deliberately left it alone rather than widening the diff. Happy to file it separately.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
OpenAI request traces now include the sampling seed and normalized stop sequences when provided, including a seed value of zero. Stop sequences include only string values.
Traces identify recognized output formats as text or JSON, including JSON Schema and Pydantic model formats, as well as supported Responses API text formats. Attributes are omitted when values are absent or the output format cannot be identified.
The OpenAI instrumentation recorded sampling parameters such as
gen_ai.request.temperature but silently dropped three request attributes
defined by the OTel GenAI semantic conventions: gen_ai.request.seed and
gen_ai.output.type (both Conditionally Required) and
gen_ai.request.stop_sequences (Recommended). No other attribute carried
these values, so they were lost from the trace entirely.
That breaks reproducibility: a trace cannot be replayed faithfully, because
a request that pinned a seed or asked for JSON output cannot be
distinguished from one that did not. A replayed response_format request
returns free text instead of JSON.
All three attributes already exist in the pinned opentelemetry-semantic-
conventions (verified against the resolved 0.63b1 wheel), so no semconv
change is needed.
The change is additive and confined to the shared _set_request_attributes,
which every wrapper already calls, so chat completions, legacy
completions, embeddings and the Responses API pick it up without any
wrapper-level change.
- seed is read straight from kwargs next to temperature and top_p.
- stop is normalized to a tuple, since the SDK accepts either a single
string or a list while the semconv attribute is a sequence.
- gen_ai.output.type is derived from response_format inside the existing
response_format branch: json_schema / json_object / a pydantic model map
to "json", text maps to "text".
The attributes are emitted only when the caller sets the corresponding
parameter, so spans for requests that do not use them are unchanged.

The OpenAI instrumentation records request seed and normalized stop sequences as span attributes. It records output type for recognized response formats, including Responses API text formats. Tests cover synchronous and asynchronous requests, format variants, and omitted values.

Summary
Record seed and stop sequences packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_request_sampling_attributes.py
The instrumentation normalizes stop strings and filters lists or tuples to string values. It records seed and nonempty stop sequences. Tests cover synchronous and asynchronous requests and omitted attributes.
Map response formats to output types packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_request_sampling_attributes.py
The instrumentation maps recognized response formats and Pydantic models to json or text. It checks Responses API text.format when response_format has no recognized type. Tests cover format variants and omitted output types.
Output-type recording remains incomplete for two request forms, but neither omission is a new regression.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fafd9
The change adds request data to traces, including unredacted stop strings. No new permissions or request-routing changes were identified. Privacy impact depends on what those strings contain and how traces are filtered and accessed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added data exposure is request-specific stop text reaching recording spans through existing instrumentation paths. Whether sensitive values are used, who can read exported traces, and how tenants or environments are isolated cannot be determined from the supplied evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Request attributes are set before the prompt-content check. Disabling content tracing therefore does not suppress the new stop attribute. However, the documented opt-out concerns prompts, completions, and embeddings; it does not establish a promise to suppress all request metadata. Downstream privacy enforcement was not supplied.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Where stop values may contain sensitive text, explicitly classify this attribute in the telemetry privacy policy and apply filtering or redaction appropriate to that deployment. Clarify that disabling prompt capture does not disable request metadata.

Addresses two CodeRabbit findings on traceloop#4548.
1. gen_ai.output.type was only derived from response_format, which the
Responses API does not have -- responses.create() declares the output
format as text.format, so a Responses request asking for JSON output
recorded nothing. Read text.format as a fallback.
This is mapped in the shared attribute setter rather than in
prepare_kwargs_for_shared_attributes on purpose: the Responses API nests
the schema flat ({"type": ..., "schema": ...}) instead of under a
"json_schema" key, so aliasing it onto response_format would fall through
to the generic pydantic branch and record a meaningless
gen_ai.request.structured_output_schema derived from the dict itself.
gen_ai.request.structured_output_schema is therefore left alone for
Responses calls, and a test guards that.
2. The pydantic test called chat.completions.create(response_format=Model),
which is not a supported call -- the model class is only accepted by
chat.completions.parse(). Switched to parse(), with the mocked message
content satisfying the model, and confirmed Completions.parse is
instrumented.
The format mapping is also reworked to read `type` uniformly from a dict or
a model. That was needed for correctness, not just tidiness:
ResponseTextConfig.format is typed as a model, so a wrapper carrying
format={"type": "text"} would have hit the bare-model branch and been
misreported as json. A declared `type` is now preferred, a nested `format`
is unwrapped, and only a model with neither is treated as a bare output
schema.
Also adds docstrings to the helpers introduced in the previous commit, which
addresses the docstring-coverage pre-merge warning.

…-type mapping
Addresses the remaining CodeRabbit finding on traceloop#4548.
ResponsesCreateParams.text is typed ResponseTextConfigParam, a TypedDict, so
it is always a plain dict at request time and never a ResponseTextConfig
model. The nested-`format` unwrap branch therefore guarded a shape the
request path cannot produce, and the test asserting it was dead weight.
Removing the branch is not only a simplification. A user schema passed to
chat.completions.parse() may legitimately declare a field called `format`,
and the unwrap recursed into it: a schema whose `format` field held another
model was classified from that nested model's `type` instead of being
recognised as a bare output schema, so a legitimate parse() request could
end up with no gen_ai.output.type at all. Only the declared `type` is
consulted now.
The dict-shaped Responses coverage is unchanged and remains the meaningful
case; the freed test slot now pins the `format`-field regression instead.

Code Listing 1: The create_planner_response function used to structure output from GPT4o.
The create_planner_response function takes as input enums for frontier nodes, room nodes, region nodes, object nodes, and the answer options for the particular question being answered by the VLM. These enums are used to populate the member variables of the Goto_frontier_node_step, Goto_object_node_step, and Answer classes, enforcing both type as well as the options available when calling the OpenAI API.

Recognize Pydantic model classes.
chat.completions.parse() forwards the response_format class to _set_request_attributes. OpenAI 1.99.7 accepts Pydantic v1 model classes, but _is_pydantic_model checks only instances and model_json_schema(). A Pydantic v1 class satisfies neither check, so gen_ai.output.type is omitted.

Responses.parse takes its structured-output schema in text_format, not in text or response_format. The wrapper passes the caller's kwargs through unchanged, and the output-type mapping never reads text_format. Parse spans therefore omit gen_ai.output.type for structured outputs. The mapping already reads text.format for the Responses API, so the same json value should be set when text_format is supplied.

feat(instrumentation): ...orfix(instrumentation): ....What was wrong
The OpenAI instrumentation records sampling parameters such as
gen_ai.request.temperature, but silently dropped three request attributes defined by the OTel GenAI semantic conventions:seedgen_ai.request.seedstopgen_ai.request.stop_sequencesresponse_formatgen_ai.output.typeNo other attribute carried these values, so they were lost from the trace entirely. Reproduced on
main(be498301c, 0.62.4) with the mock-transport script in #4538.This breaks reproducibility. A trace cannot be replayed faithfully, because a request that pinned a seed or asked for JSON output is indistinguishable from one that did not — a replayed
response_formatrequest returns free text instead of JSON.For comparison,
opentelemetry-instrumentation-genai-openaialready records all three on the same script.Fix
All three attributes already exist in the pinned
opentelemetry-semantic-conventions(I verified this against the resolved0.63b1wheel inuv.lock, not just againstmain), so no semconv change is needed. The change is additive and confined to the shared
_set_request_attributesinshared/__init__.py, which every wrapper already calls — so chat completions, legacy completions, embeddings and the Responses API all pick it up with no wrapper-level change.seedis read straight fromkwargs, next totemperatureandtop_p.stopgoes through a new_normalize_stop_sequences()helper. The SDK accepts either a single string or a list, while the semconv attribute is a sequence, so a bare"END"is normalized to("END",).gen_ai.output.typeis derived by a new_output_type_from_response_format()helper, hooked into the pre-existingif response_format :=block:json_schema/json_object/ a pydantic model map to"json",textmaps to"text".The attributes are emitted only when the caller actually sets the corresponding parameter, so spans for requests that do not use them are unchanged.
The Responses API needs nothing here: it has no
seedorstop, and expresses output format astext.formatrather thanresponse_format.Tests
New
tests/traces/test_request_sampling_attributes.py— 8 tests, all against an in-processhttpx.MockTransport, so no API key and no recorded cassette is needed:temperaturestopas a bare string, normalized to a one-element sequenceseed=0, which is falsy but meaningful and must not be droppedresponse_formatvariants (text,json_object,json_schema) and a pydantic modelVerification
All of this has actually been run:
The full package suite is green, so the change to the shared
_set_request_attributes— which every chat / completions / embeddings / Responses wrapper calls — regresses nothing. On formatting:
ruff format --checkdoes flag both files, but it is not enforced here and the disagreement is pre-existing repo-wide (14 of 18 files underopentelemetry/are already non-conforming, including code this PR does not touch).pyproject.tomlsetsline-length = 120while the existing code is hand-wrapped at ~88, and CI has noruff formatstep — only[tool.ruff.lint] select = ["E", "F", "W"], which passes. I matched the surrounding hand-wrapped style rather than reformatting and adding unrelated churn.Earlier revisions of this PR said the suite could not be executed locally; that was true when written, and is no longer —
uvhas since been installed, so the numbers above are from real runs.Note on a separate issue
While working in this file I noticed
v1/realtime_wrappers.py:130setsGEN_AI_OUTPUT_TYPEtojson.dumps(session.modalities)— a JSON array, which violates thetext | json | image | speechenum for that attribute. That looks like a genuine pre-existing bug but it is unrelated to this PR, so I have deliberately left it alone rather than widening the diff. Happy to file it separately.Summary by CodeRabbit
