fix(openai): add gen_ai.request.model to meter datapoint attributes - #4594
OpenAI meter datapoints (e.g. gen_ai.server.time_to_first_token) carried gen_ai.response.model but no gen_ai.request.model.
Changes:
metric_shared_attributes now accepts request_model and emits gen_ai.request.model alongside gen_ai.response.model.
Threads request model through chat (incl. ChatStream + legacy v0 streaming helpers), embeddings, and image_gen paths from request kwargs.
Add tests/metrics/test_request_model_metric.py asserting both attributes appear on datapoints via InMemoryMetricReader (no live keys); extend test_embedding_metrics_handler expectation.
OpenAI metric attributes now include gen_ai.request.model. Chat, embedding, and image generation wrappers pass the requested model into metric construction. Chat streaming records the request model separately from the response model, including when a stream does not report a response model.
Changes: Request model metrics
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared attributes and chat metrics packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/chat_wrappers.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/metrics/test_request_model_metric.py
The shared attribute builder accepts and emits gen_ai.request.model. Non-streaming chat paths pass the request model into metric construction. Tests check recorded request- and response-model attributes.
Chat streaming paths record the request model separately from the response model. When a stream does not report a response model, the response-model attribute remains unset. Tests cover both cases.
Embedding and image metrics packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/embeddings_wrappers.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/image_gen_wrappers.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_embedding_metrics_handler.py
Embedding and image generation wrappers pass the request model into metric construction. The embedding test expects the request-model attribute.
The PR is broadly mergeable, with minor metric attribute consistency fixes recommended before or shortly after merge.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 757f4
The change is limited to telemetry metadata and does not change request authorization or service routing. No introduced security defect was established, but downstream privacy controls and limits on distinct metric labels remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is additional request metadata in the instrumented application's existing metric pipeline. Source does not establish the downstream readers, tenant isolation, exporter destinations, or storage retention needed to determine wider data exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The inspected chat and image wrappers retain their instrumentation-suppression checks. The routed test symbols use in-memory or mocked metrics and are not new production entrypoints. The changes do not add an authority-bearing API.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Where applications accept user-defined request-model identifiers, apply an explicit metric-label privacy and cardinality policy before export. This is a deployment-dependent hardening proposal, not an observed vulnerability.

Explanation
The title names the main change: adding gen_ai.request.model to OpenAI meter datapoint attributes. The raw summary shows metric_shared_attributes gains a request_model parameter, and chat, embeddings, and image generation wrappers pass the request model through. The title uses the conventional fix(openai): prefix and is concise and specific, so a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

Explanation
Issue #3144 requires gen_ai.request.model on OpenAI meter datapoints. metric_shared_attributes adds the attribute. Chat, ChatStream, legacy streaming helpers, embeddings, and image generation pass the request model from request data. Tests verify request and response model attributes, including streaming cases where the response model is absent.

Addressed the review finding: the streaming TTFT path no longer falls back to the request model for gen_ai.response.model. _process_item now accumulates the chunk first, and _shared_attributes reports only the model seen on the stream (unset until a chunk carries one), while gen_ai.request.model stays separate. Added streaming tests covering both the populated and unset response-model cases.

Add request attributes to legacy streaming timing metrics.
The synchronous and asynchronous legacy helpers have request_kwargs at both timing calls. Pass the request-model attributes to streaming_time_to_first_token and streaming_time_to_generate. Build the first-token attributes before consuming the stream because the current shared_attributes mapping is created afterward.
Apply the same change in _abuild_from_streaming_response.

Proposed fix filters out `None` values before building the attributes dict.

Omit model metric attributes when their values are None.
On the image generation path, kwargs.get("model") or None yields None when no model is passed. That None reaches both request_model and response_model. metric_shared_attributes then sets gen_ai.request.model and gen_ai.response.model to None without checking the value. A None attribute value can fail OTLP encoding. Depending on the exporter version, the attribute is dropped and an encoding error is logged on export, or it is sent as an empty value. Either way it carries no model information. Add the keys only when the value is present.

at line 428:
Update metric_shared_attributes to omit the gen_ai.request.model and
gen_ai.response.model attributes when request_model or response_model is None;
add each model attribute only when its value is present, while preserving the
other shared attributes.

Fixes #3144.
OpenAI meter datapoints (e.g. gen_ai.server.time_to_first_token) carried gen_ai.response.model but no gen_ai.request.model.
