Problem and value

  • Related issue: Fixes Add Verifiable Source Evidence to Architecture Relationships #1132.
  • Architecture currently verifies repository source evidence only for components. A connection-level sources property is rejected by schema validation, so a displayed relationship cannot carry a first-class, revision-pinned explanation of its authored source.
  • This change adds connection-level evidence to the existing repository-evidence contract and exposes it through relationship inspection without changing authored topology or canonical SVG geometry.
  • Before/after evidence entry point: test/relationship-source-evidence.test.mjs creates a real temporary Git repository, delivers an Architecture artifact with connection evidence, checks the verified HTML payload, and compares the SVG with the same artifact without connection evidence. A tracked standalone artifact is provided at examples/architecture-relationship-evidence.html, generated from examples/architecture-relationship-evidence.architecture.json against the pinned baseline revision.

AI assistance and accountability

  • AI use: implementation, investigation, tests, and review assistance
  • Tools and model (if known), and assisted areas: Codex with repository graph inspection, GitHub API/CLI inspection, TDD implementation, focused regression testing, and generated-artifact verification.
  • Accountable contributor: @outlier27-cell
  • Problem origin: synthetic probe against the fixed dev baseline showed /connections/0.sources fails with schema/additionalProperties; the issue is based on that reproducible CLI behavior.
  • I reviewed the submitted changes and explanation, understand their impact, and can answer questions about them. Validation results and gaps are recorded below.

Stability impact

  • Impact class and changed behavior/shared callers: schema, shared repository-evidence verification, generated Viewer source-evidence API, Architecture relationship inspection, and generated HTML examples. Existing node evidence and non-Architecture evidence continue to use the same nodes payload.
  • Existing behavior preserved / intended compatibility changes / failure behavior: connection evidence is optional and legacy inputs remain valid. A relationship that declares sources must have a stable authored id; invalid revision, path, line range, or relationship identity fails closed with repository-evidence diagnostics. No network access is introduced.

Tests run

  • Comparison base: 500d4a65211ffe607fde6b3ce7505027b45bb59e; candidate: 186787e72107dfe779cd0ed07b267509216b8dad. This head also includes the README sponsor removal from current dev (docs: remove Raven sponsor entry from READMEs #1162); it does not change relationship evidence.
  • npm test — 19/19 core smoke tests passed.
  • npm run test:generated — viewer, brand marks, validators, release identity, golden renders, template freshness, and version sync passed.
  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs test/repository-evidence.test.mjs test/repository-evidence-types.test.mjs test/relationship-source-evidence.test.mjs — 110 passed, 1 platform skip, 0 failed.
  • The new regression covers a real temporary Git repository, positive connection evidence, independent relationship payload, SVG geometry preservation, missing relationship identity, and unsafe source paths.
  • Browser behavior was exercised with Chrome. The relationship selection assertions and existing source-evidence assertions passed. The browser runner reported ARCHIFY_TEMP_CLEANUP while closing one Windows Chrome profile; this is an environment cleanup failure, so the browser command is not reported as green.

Visual evidence

  • Evidence provided: browser/CDP assertions in test/repository-evidence-browser.test.mjs verify selecting users-to-cdn exposes src/router.js, the authored label, line range, and relationship permalink identity in the Semantic Passport.
  • Comparison conditions: same delivered Architecture artifact, same 1440x900 viewport, light/dark themes, GitHub/Gitee/GitLab/local-only repository modes.
  • Automated or browser checks: functional browser assertions passed before the Windows profile cleanup failure described above.
  • Perceptual visual review: not separately claimed. The relationship inspector evidence is the automated browser assertion above; it shows a verified source location, not proof that the code establishes the relationship.

Remote CI status

  • GitHub Actions for current head 186787e72107dfe779cd0ed07b267509216b8dad completed successfully: 22 checks, including full regression, both browser-regression lanes, ZIP freshness, package smoke, Windows portability, WebM decode, website, and CodeRabbit. Deployment jobs were skipped as expected.
  • The relationship inspector is covered by automated browser assertions. No separate manual perceptual review is claimed; the source reference identifies a verified location and does not prove that the code establishes the relationship.

Generated artifacts

Regenerated from viewer/template.source.html and the final source tree:

  • archify/assets/template.html
  • archify/renderers/shared/generated-validators.mjs
  • checked-in development and packaged example HTML files
  • examples/web-app.html template freshness fixture
  • examples/architecture-relationship-evidence.architecture.json
  • examples/architecture-relationship-evidence.html

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

The change is additive and can be reverted as one commit. The main compatibility risk is the shared evidence payload shape and the generated Viewer template; focused cross-renderer evidence tests and generated checks cover those boundaries.

Blast Radius: repository-evidence

The verifier is shared by all typed renderers, but relationship collection is gated to Architecture and node payload keys remain unchanged. Canonical SVG geometry and relationship routing are not modified.

Summary

Reviewed base 500d4a65211ffe607fde6b3ce7505027b45bb59e; PR snapshot head a23dcdac2c676961ed2a94d9a21d53c900d18db1. Architecture connections now accept optional revision-pinned source evidence, shown when inspecting a relationship. Sourced connections require IDs. Existing diagrams and node evidence remain supported. The author reports unchanged topology and SVG geometry. The example pins evidence to the base revision. The author reports automated checks and browser assertions passed, but browser cleanup failed on Windows and visual review was skipped. No CI checks were observed for checked revision 1176c65b2b610811ef5401ea52f39aeda16c79c4; the author reports no checks for the PR snapshot head.

Architecture connections can include repository source references that the shared evidence pipeline verifies and publishes by relationship ID. The viewer displays this evidence when a relationship is inspected. Tests cover evidence delivery, validation errors, SVG geometry, and browser display.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The PR meets the contribution-scope criteria. Its description states the user problem: Architecture connections could not carry schema-valid, revision-pinned source evidence. It defines one focused delivery slice across the schema, shared verifier, Viewer relationship inspection, tests, and generated artifacts. It documents compatibility: connection sources are optional, legacy inputs remain valid, node evidence remains supported, and no migration or network access is introduced. It documents failure behavior, including closed failure for invalid revisions, paths, line ranges, and missing relationship IDs, with regression coverage for missing IDs and path escape. The diff matches that scope and links issue #1132, which covers the new contract and acceptance criteria.

Full details: Validation Evidence

Explanation

Validation evidence remains incomplete at reviewed head 1176c65, compared with base 500d4a6. The positive relationship artifact is present and contains verified author-to-verifier evidence. The focused test covers valid evidence, SVG preservation, missing IDs, and path escape. However, viewer/focus.js:1036-1038 conditionally renders relationship evidence, while generated archify/assets/template.html:9675 and tracked examples call renderSourceEvidence(record.id, true) unconditionally. The generated Viewer is therefore stale and the preserved-node-evidence claim is not supported. The browser test captures node evidence before relationship selection, then expects the no-evidence relationship panel to be hidden; it does not verify node evidence after that selection. applyReachability clears the relationship pin without restoring node evidence. No connection-specific tests cover missing /meta/repository, unavailable revisions, invalid ranges, or out-of-range lines. The reported test results are author reports and do not establish final-head generated or browser success.

Resolution

PR author: regenerate archify/assets/template.html, all affected examples, and archify.zip from the final Viewer sources; run npm run test:generated at 1176c65. Add Architecture-connection tests for missing repository metadata, unavailable revisions, invalid ranges, and out-of-range lines. Update the browser regression to assert node evidence after selecting a relationship without evidence and after reachability clears a pin. Run the focused, generated, and browser suites at final head, and report any Chrome cleanup failure with an owner and follow-up.

Major · Keep node evidence when a relationship has no verified sources. · focus.js:1036

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep node evidence when a relationship has no verified sources.

The unconditional renderSourceEvidence(record.id, true) call runs after the node path has already rendered the source node's evidence. When the pinned relationship has no id, or its id has no verified sources, the lookup returns [] and the evidence panel is hidden. Pinning a relationship without evidence therefore removes node evidence that was visible before this change. The issue and PR objectives require preserving existing node evidence behavior.

Call the relationship lookup only when it returns evidence:

Suggested fix
-        renderSourceEvidence(record.id, true);
+        if (record.id && Archify.sourceEvidence.relationship(record.id).length) {
+          renderSourceEvidence(record.id, true);
+        }

This keeps relationship evidence for relationships that have it. It leaves the node panel unchanged for legacy relationships and for relationships without verified sources. The author must still decide whether verified relationship evidence should replace node evidence while a relationship is pinned. The PR objectives do not settle that point. The fix above keeps the replacement behavior for evidence-bearing relationships only.

Add a browser assertion that pins a relationship without sources and checks that the node evidence panel stays visible. The inspected source does not show whether such an assertion exists.

Addressed in 30196a0be2aae32c6dc032e6b55e9cc0b8bab263.

Relationship source evidence now replaces the node source panel only when the pinned relationship has a verified relationship payload. Relationships without sources retain the existing node evidence. The browser regression covers both the evidence-bearing relationship and a no-source relationship while node evidence remains visible.

The browser assertions pass; the Windows runner still reports the existing ARCHIFY_TEMP_CLEANUP profile-close failure. Remote CI remains uncreated for the current head.

@tt-a1i Ready for review.

Head 186787e7 includes current dev (#1162). All 22 checks passed, with no unresolved threads.

The relationship inspector is shown on the supplied example. The reference is a verified source location, not proof that the code establishes the relationship. The earlier CI failure is resolved. Please review.

Merge current dev, including the sponsor page move, skill distribution,
and sequence header centering. Rebuild the gallery receipts and canonical
zip from the merged sources.

🟡 Connection evidence changes disappear from comparisons

When a connection's sources change, compareArchitecture reports no connection change. Its CONNECTION_FIELDS omits sources, so comparison receipts hide edits to relationship evidence.

Learn more

Architecture compare groups connection fields to classify changes in its receipt. The new sources field is valid on connections, but CONNECTION_FIELDS does not include it. compareEntities therefore treats an existing connection whose only edit is its evidence as unchanged and drops it from the receipt. Component sources already have an evidence classification.

Example: Two diagrams both contain connection author-to-verifier. Adding [{"path":"src/router.js","line":1}] to its sources in the second diagram leaves changes.connections empty, rather than showing an evidence change.

Recommended fix: Add sources to the evidence group in CONNECTION_FIELDS. Update the connection summary's status keys if evidence changes gain an evidence-changed status, and cover source-only edits through the public compare command.
