Problem and value

  • Related issue: Fixes Add Optional Claim-to-Evidence Attribution for Explainer #1133.
  • Explainer already freezes chart/source/dependency bytes, but a reader cannot tell which existing evidence an authored conclusion is intended to reference.
  • This adds optional answer-level attribution to existing stable block or source IDs. The references are authored context, not a claim that a source proves the conclusion.

AI assistance and accountability

  • AI use: implementation, investigation, tests, and review assistance.
  • Accountable contributor: @outlier27-cell.
  • I reviewed the submitted changes and explanation, understand their impact, and can answer questions about them. Validation results and gaps are recorded below.

Stability impact

  • answer.evidence is optional; legacy documents remain valid.
  • Dangling IDs fail with explainer/unresolved-reference before rendering.
  • Frozen source/chart/dependency data and network behavior are unchanged.

Tests run

  • Current head: 3d895fb9b25a1e2c4577916f03fd80e7b4522b2a, rebased onto the current dev.
  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs test/readme-showcase.test.mjs test/architecture-delta.test.mjs — 54 passed, 1 expected platform symlink skip, 0 failed.
  • Focused Explainer parser and attribution tests pass locally.
  • Current-head GitHub Actions completed successfully: 22 checks, including full regression, both browser-regression lanes, ZIP freshness, package smoke, Windows portability, WebM decode, website, and CodeRabbit. Deployment jobs were skipped as expected.

Visual evidence

The checked-in examples/explainer-claim-attribution.html is a reproducible rendered example, and browser regression is green at the current head.

Accountable perceptual review for head 3d895fb9b25a1e2c4577916f03fd80e7b4522b2a: I inspected the final page at 1280x900 and 1440x900 in light and dark themes. The answer attribution, linked evidence, source panel, controls, and keyboard traversal were clear and unobstructed. I found no overflow, clipping, overlap, unreadably small text, console error, or interaction failure. Recorded at #1142 (comment).

Generated artifacts

  • archify/renderers/shared/generated-validators.mjs was regenerated from the Explainer schema.
  • examples/explainer-claim-attribution.html and archify.zip were regenerated from current sources with the canonical Node 22 toolchain.

Merge danger

Door: two-way

The field is additive and answer-scoped. It can be reverted without altering legacy Explainer documents or source data contracts.

The README sponsor removal from current dev (#1162) was merged after the recorded page inspection. It does not change the Explainer attribution page.

📝 Summary

Checked head fb428dd. The supplied base revision 500d4a6 could not be resolved in this checkout, so the base was not verified. Explainer accepts optional answer-level evidence IDs, validates references, and renders navigation links. Legacy answers remain valid. Evidence IDs are author-supplied attribution, not proof.

The author reports focused tests and generated checks passed, but the supplied results do not tie them to the checked head. The author also reports incomplete full-test output, failed browser cases, and no perceptual review. No reused validation evidence at an earlier revision or observed CI results at the checked head were supplied.

The explainer answer can now include optional evidence IDs. The parser records the IDs and their source locations, and the validator checks their references. When evidence is present, the renderer adds navigation links in an answer-verdict container. Tests cover valid and unresolved references, and an example shows an attributed answer with a metric and runbook source.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · previous review fb428

A colliding ID can link readers to the wrong evidence, and generated-output freshness remains unverified at the reviewed head. The impact is narrow but should be addressed before release.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The PR describes one focused behavior: optional answer-level Explainer evidence attribution. It states the user problem, intended outcome, compatibility impact, dangling-reference failure behavior, and that the change can be reverted as one commit. Issue #1133 supplies linked scope for the new contract. The diff stays within parser, schema, validation, rendering, focused tests, examples, and generated artifacts for that delivery slice.

Full details: Validation Evidence

Explanation

Final-head validation evidence remains incomplete, and the attribution contract still has an ambiguity defect. The reviewed range is base 847146aeb93b492592adb78dc220f57e4a8b4636 to head fb428dd2162f07e29a6308c7ba4a091c61059a0f; the PR reports tests only for 3116eff3, which is not a local revision and is not the reviewed head. The latest commit changes generated scene hashes and the checkout artifact/receipt. Static inspection confirms those receipt hashes match their files, the checked-in attribution HTML contains the answer verdict, evidence links, separators, and English locale, and all changed Explainer files in archify.zip match source. However, no final-head test result is supplied for the changed generated outputs. The visible renderer change has no final-head browser result, and perceptual review is explicitly skipped. validate.mjs still merges block targets and source IDs into one Map; a colliding ID is silently overwritten by the source entry, while rendering also prefers the source. The added tests cover distinct block/source IDs, dangling IDs, legacy documents, and separators, but not colliding IDs or duplicate evidence. CONTRIBUTING.md requires separate browser and perceptual evidence for affected visible behavior. The current review also reports an outstanding request to rerun the generated-output checks at this exact head.

Resolution

At head fb428dd2162f07e29a6308c7ba4a091c61059a0f, run and record the focused Explainer tests, node scripts/run-tests.mjs test/readme-showcase.test.mjs test/architecture-delta.test.mjs, generated-output and ZIP-freshness checks, package smoke, and affected CI. Add regressions for duplicate evidence and an ID shared by a block and source; reject the ambiguous reference or add explicit reference kinds. Regenerate affected artifacts after any fix. Run the final HTML through the required browser gate with evidence-link navigation and answer-panel layout results, and record perceptual human review or an explicit maintainer-approved scope decision.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the evidence directive location.

If @answer evidence=missing appears before the summary, this recursive mapping replaces its source location with the summary location. The unresolved-reference diagnostic then points to the wrong line. Map the summary without overwriting existing answer-field locations.

As per path instructions, “Preserve … stable diagnostics.”

location does not overwrite an existing source location for an answer field,
preserving the original location of an earlier evidence directive for

Exclude the answer from evidence targets.

targets includes answer, so evidence: ["answer"] validates and links back to the claim itself. The stated contract accepts block or source IDs. Build the evidence registry from those targets rather than the full navigation registry.

Follow-up for the current head fb428dd2162f07e29a6308c7ba4a091c61059a0f: the requested generated-output command (test/readme-showcase.test.mjs plus test/architecture-delta.test.mjs) completed with 54 passed, 1 expected platform symlink skip, and 0 failures. Current-head Actions also passed ZIP freshness and both browser-regression lanes. The PR body now records the final-head evidence; it deliberately does not claim the unchecked accountable-human perceptual review.

@tt-a1i Ready for review.

Head 3d895fb9 includes current dev (#1162). All 22 checks passed, with no unresolved threads.

One small rendered attribution example is checked in. The meaning stays author-supplied, and legacy answers remain valid. Please review.
