fix(ffi): wait for the pool lock in glide_pool_metrics instead of reporting zeros - #7130
glide_pool_metrics took the pool lock with try_lock and, whenever another holder had it, reported LockHeld with no counts. The Python and Go bindings show that as an empty pool: idle_count == 0 while clients are idle. The holders are short: a min_idle warmup thread pushing its entry, a release resetting state, the abandon monitor scanning. Every one of them releases the lock without awaiting, so the read can wait for it. This PR makes it wait.
The function now takes the lock with blocking_lock, as the Java copy in jni_pool.rs has done since #7063. blocking_lock panics on a Tokio runtime thread, and a panic through extern "C" aborts the process, so on a runtime thread the function keeps the non-waiting read and reports LockHeld. No binding calls it from a runtime thread today.
Python idle_count, active_count, total_count, metrics() and Go IdleCount(), ActiveCount(), TotalCount() return the real counts under contention instead of zeros. Signatures are unchanged.
LockHeld is now reachable only from a Tokio runtime thread. Its doc comment, and the C header cbindgen generates from it, say so.
No public API or C ABI change. PoolMetrics gains #[must_use], which affects Rust callers only.
Implementation
ffi/src/pool_ffi.rs, glide_pool_metrics: tokio::runtime::Handle::try_current() picks the branch. Off a runtime, blocking_lock. On one, try_lock, and LockHeld when it fails. Both branches yield the same MutexGuard, so the read is one code path. The comment above the branch states the one fact the wait depends on: no holder awaits while holding the pool lock.
Reviewers: the thing worth checking is that fact. Every ClientPool lock site in pool_ffi.rs and glide-core/src/pool.rs does in-memory work only under the guard: release_client_async drops the guard before the network reset and, as of ab3def5, logs a failed reset before re-taking it (CodeRabbit caught the warning sitting inside the lock), and the try_acquire adapter drop under the lock is a refcount decrement because the pool holds an extra strong count. The guard's discriminator is a proxy: tokio sets the current handle wherever it enters a runtime (enter_runtime sets both the handle and the state blocking_lock checks), so the guard can decline a read where waiting was legal (Handle::enter, spawn_blocking), never the reverse.
Python: the metrics() docstrings in both pools drop "or the read was declined", which no binding thread can observe after this change. Go: one test comment in pool_scope_test.go that described the declined read.
This supersedes the Python-side retry loop this PR first proposed, which re-read while the FFI reported contention. That loop fixed one binding of three and could not tell a destroyed pool from a held lock with the integer code the FFI returned at the time. #7457 replaced the integer code with the PoolMetrics struct; this PR builds on it.
Limitations
"No holder awaits while holding the pool lock" is a convention, enforced nowhere. ClientPool is behind tokio::sync::Mutex although no holder awaits, which is the case tokio's docs say wants std::sync::Mutex; moving it would make this PR's runtime-thread branch and LockHeld disappear. That is a larger change across FFI, JNI and Node and is a candidate follow-up issue, not part of this PR.
The bindings still return zeros on UnknownPool (a destroyed pool) and do not branch on status. Raising there, as acquire already does on a destroyed pool, is a public behaviour change across five bindings and is deferred, as stated in refactor(ffi): return pool metrics by value with a status #7457.
The FFI and the Java JNI copy now take the lock two different ways (JNI blocks unconditionally). A shared helper in glide_core::pool would stop them drifting; out of scope here.
pool_metrics_tests (4 tests): contended_read_waits_for_the_lock_and_reports_read holds the lock on one thread, starts the read on another, asserts the read is still blocked 50 ms in, releases, and checks Read with the reserved total. contended_read_on_a_runtime_thread_reports_lock_held_with_no_counts runs the read inside Runtime::block_on with the lock held and asserts LockHeld with zero counts. Both are red on the committed tree in the way their names say: with main's try_lock body the first fails at "the read returned while the lock was held" (10/10); with the runtime guard removed the second panics with "Cannot block the current thread from within a runtime". 25 consecutive green runs on the fix.
Python wrapper rebuilt on 3.14 against this FFI; tests/async_tests/test_async_pool.py and tests/sync_tests/test_sync_pool.py under -n 4 on valkey 9.2.0-rc1: 60 passed, 2 skipped.
Evidence for the symptom's rate before the fix: in ten passes of the Python CI workflow on one tree (the test(python): fix xdist pool-state leaks and cluster bootstrap race #7440 campaign), test_pool_metrics failed in 2 of 10, both on the free-threaded 3.14t interpreter against 9.2.0-rc1, each with assert 0 >= 1 on idle_count.
Not run: Go integration tests (CI covers them).

AsyncClientPool.idle_count/active_count/total_count/metrics() called the
FFI glide_pool_metrics, which acquires the pool mutex with try_lock and
returns -1 WITHOUT writing the out-pointers when the lock is momentarily
held (background min_idle client creation, release state-reset, or the
abandon monitor scan). The cffi out-buffers are zero-initialized, so on
contention the read silently reported 0 instead of the true count.
test_pool_metrics races that window: _wait_for_pool_ready(pool, 1) sees
idle>=1, but the very next 'assert pool.idle_count >= 1' hits a contended
read and gets a phantom 0 -> 'assert 0 >= 1'. Standalone was hit in CI;
cluster passed the same run, consistent with a timing race.
Route all metric accessors through a _read_metrics() helper that honors
the return code and re-reads while the FFI reports contention (-1), with
a bounded deadline. -2 (invalid pool) stays terminal. No API/behavior
change; transient contention no longer surfaces as a bogus 0.

Ready for human review.
Commit 9da7306 moves the fix into ffi. glide_pool_metrics now waits for the pool lock with blocking_lock when the caller is off a Tokio runtime thread, so Python async, Python sync and Go stop reading zeros while the lock is held. The four pool_metrics_tests pass locally. Only minor title and description issues are left.
Risk: Low. If the wait were long, a metrics call from the Python asyncio thread would stall the event loop. Every pool-lock holder in pool.rs and pool_ffi.rs releases the lock without awaiting, and Java's metrics call already uses blocking_lock the same way.
Open findings (2)
(minor) The PR title is not in Conventional Commits form, and it says Python although the fix is now in ffi and also reaches Go. Something like fix(ffi): wait for the pool lock in glide_pool_metrics would fit.
(minor) The PR description still describes the dropped Python _read_metrics() retry loop and -1/-2 return codes. It does not describe the blocking_lock change in ffi that the PR now makes.
Resolved (4)
The diff against main was empty after merge 773bdbf. Commit 9da7306 fixes the race in glide_pool_metrics (ffi/src/pool_ffi.rs:760-771) by waiting for the lock instead of returning LockHeld with zero counts.
(minor) python/glide-async/python/glide/client_pool.py:318 Sync ClientPool.metrics() returned zeros on a contended read. The FFI now waits for the lock on non-runtime threads, so the sync pool gets correct counts too.
(minor) There was no test for the contended read. The PR now replaces the pinned test with contended_read_waits_for_the_lock_and_reports_read and adds a runtime-thread LockHeld test. Both pass, and the first fails against the old try_lock code.
python/glide-async/python/glide/client_pool.py:321 A destroyed pool also returned -1, so reading metrics after close() spun for 2 s. This no longer applies: the retry loop is gone and the FFI reports UnknownPool before it takes the lock.
Backport: Not needed. glide_pool_metrics is not on release-2.2, release-2.3, release-2.4 or release-2.5 (git grep in ffi/src finds nothing on those branches).
Updated for 9da7306 at 2026-10-29 20:55 UTC. The bot rewrites this comment on every review.
glide_pool_metrics wrote three counts through out-pointers and returned
an int32 code, -1 for both an unknown pool and a contended lock, writing
nothing. The counts and the verdict on whether they were read travelled
separately, so a binding could take zero-filled buffers as the pool's
state (#7129).
The function now returns a repr(C) PoolMetrics { status, idle, active,
total } by value, so no caller holds counts without the status. When a
read is declined is unchanged (try_lock); #7130 changes that. Go and
Python read the struct and report the same numbers as before, zeros on
a non-Read status. Java and Node keep their own copies.

…orting zeros
glide_pool_metrics took the pool lock with try_lock and reported LockHeld
whenever another holder had it, which the Python and Go bindings show as
an empty pool. Every holder releases the lock without awaiting, so the
wait is short; the function now blocks for it, as the Java copy has done
since #7063. On a Tokio runtime thread, where blocking_lock would panic
and abort the process through extern "C", it keeps the non-waiting read.
PoolMetrics is #[must_use] so a Rust caller cannot drop the status
silently. The Python metrics() docstrings no longer mention a declined
read, which no binding thread can observe after this change.
Supersedes the Python-side retry loop this PR first proposed.

The function comment drops the old behaviour's consequence, which the
commit message carries, and the volatile note that no binding reads
metrics from a runtime thread. The runtime-thread test loses a doc line
that repeated the function comment, and the LockHeld variant doc loses a
clause the PoolMetrics doc already states.

changed the title
Python: fix flaky test_pool_metrics idle-count phantom-zero race
fix(ffi): wait for the pool lock in glide_pool_metrics instead of reporting zeros
Oct 29, 2026
@xShinnRyuu, thanks for this one. Your root-cause analysis was right in every particular: try_lock in glide_pool_metrics, the zero-filled cffi buffers, the warmup threads as the lock holder, and the async properties never looking at the return code. I used it as the starting point and changed where the fix lives. Since this PR went up, two things happened on main:
refactor(ffi): return pool metrics by value with a status #7457 changed glide_pool_metrics to return a PoolMetrics { status, idle, active, total } struct by value instead of the out-pointers and an integer code. The zero-filled buffers no longer exist, and UnknownPool and LockHeld are separate statuses, which is what the review bot's comment about -1 meaning both was asking for.
That left the read itself still declining under contention, which is the part this PR now fixes, in the FFI: blocking_lock instead of try_lock, with a guard for Tokio runtime threads where blocking would panic. That is the same fix Java made for its own copy in fix(pool): eliminate abandon monitor race for blocking commands (#6971) #7063.
Why move it from the Python binding to the FFI: the same try_lock served Python sync and Go too, so the retry loop fixed one of three bindings, and each would have needed its own copy. Fixing the lock once means the bindings need no retry at all, and the -1-after-close() spin the bot flagged cannot arise because contention stops being an error. With the merge from main, your _read_metrics change collapsed to the main version of client_pool.py; your commit is still in the branch history, and you are still the author of record on the PR.
The rework is two commits on top of the merge (9da7306 for the fix and tests, 9371e41 for comment trims) with two red/green tests on the FFI side, and the title and body are updated to describe it.
Pool metrics reads now wait for the pool lock when called off a Tokio runtime thread. On a runtime thread, a contended read still returns LockHeld. Tests and metric documentation reflect this behavior.

glide_pool_metrics waits for the lock off-runtime and returns LockHeld with zero counts when the lock is contended on a Tokio runtime thread. Tests check both paths. Go and Python comments and docstrings no longer describe declined reads as a cause of zero metrics.

Issue 7129 — The issue reports a zero idle_count during a contended metrics read; this change waits for the lock off-runtime.
Possibly related PRs
valkey-io/valkey-glide#7457 — It introduced PoolMetrics and PoolMetricsStatus::LockHeld, which this change updates.
Pool metrics now wait for the lock and report real counts instead of phantom zeros, which fixes the flaky metrics test. In rare cases where logging stalls while the pool lock is held, an async metrics call could briefly block the event loop. Moving the log call outside the lock removes that risk, and the change is mergeable with that follow-up.

release_client_async logged the reset failure while holding the pool
lock, so a metrics read arriving during the write waited for the log
sink. The warning depends only on the reset result, which is known
before the lock is taken, so it now runs before the lock, matching the
abandon-monitor cleanup path. The critical section is left with the
guard disarm and one in-memory call.
