Summary

This is a continuation of the work to add client support for a new Valkey module for remote direct memory access (RDMA). This PR makes the glide-rdma features available in the Python glide-sync client, which will be used in KV caching adapters (e.g. LMCache and vLLM).

Issue link

This Pull Request is linked to issue: ValkeyLargeObj Large-Object Module
Closes #4743

Features / Behaviour Changes

Introduces RdmaConfiguration, register_rdma_region, rdma_set, rdma_get, region.close, and other functions for memory management.

Implementation

The new configuration options are in python/glide-shared/glide_shared/config.py.
The bulk of the implementation is in python/glide-sync/glide_sync/glide_client.py.
Updated .github/workflows/pypi-cd.yml to build the python release with the RDMA feature turned on.

Limitations

RDMA not supported in pooled clients or async clients.

Testing

New tests in the python/tests directory and I've tested the full client integration against the module on real efa hardware.

Review state

Ready for human review.
No open findings. The only new commit adds test assertions that _deferred_callback_refs is held during a deferred close and cleared after _end_rdma_call, and both match close() in glide_sync/glide_client.py. The three earlier findings are still fixed.

Risk: Medium. Changes close() for the sync client and builds RDMA into every published glide-sync and glide-async FFI library. A bug in the deferred-close path would crash RDMA users who also use pubsub or IAM.

Open findings: none.

Resolved (3)

  • python/glide-sync/glide_sync/glide_client.py:2146 On the deferred close path, _pubsub_callback_ref and _credential_provider_callback_ref were dropped while the native client was still alive and its push task could still call the freed CFFI trampoline.
  • (minor) CHANGELOG.md:20 The CHANGELOG entry linked to the placeholder #TODO instead of feat(python): make rdma get/set available in glide-sync #7464.
  • (minor) The PR title was not in Conventional Commits form.

Backport: Not needed. This adds a new experimental feature (the Python sync RDMA API). It is not a bug fix.

Walkthrough

The Python sync client now supports experimental RDMA configuration and registered-memory transfers. The change adds transfer lifecycle handling, FFI build options, wheel checks, tests, and usage guidance. The async client and ClientPool reject RDMA configurations.

Changes: Synchronous RDMA support

Layer / File(s) Summary
RDMA configuration and FFI contracts
python/glide-shared/glide_shared/config.py, python/glide-shared/glide_shared/_glide_ffi.py, python/glide-shared/glide_shared/exceptions.py, python/glide-shared/glide_shared/__init__.py, python/glide-async/python/glide/glide_client.py, python/glide-sync/glide_sync/client_pool.py, python/tests/test_rdma_config.py, python/tests/sync_tests/test_sync_pool.py, python/tests/test_api_export.py
Adds RDMA provider, checksum, configuration, and error types. Client configurations serialize RDMA settings into connection requests. FFI declarations cover region registration, transfers, checksums, and cleanup. The async client and ClientPool reject configured RDMA.
Sync client regions and transfers
python/glide-sync/glide_sync/glide_client.py, python/glide-sync/glide_sync/__init__.py, python/tests/sync_tests/test_sync_rdma.py, python/tests/sync_tests/test_sync_client.py, python/tests/test_api_consistency.py
Adds registered memory regions, bounded windows, RDMA GET and SET, checksum calculation, and availability checks. Region and client lifecycle code tracks memory held by the fabric and handles transfer cancellation. Tests cover transfer behavior, errors, memory lifetime, and concurrency.
RDMA-enabled builds and wheel support
python/dev.py, python/glide-sync/setup.py, .github/workflows/pypi-cd.yml
Build commands and sync wheel builds can enable the RDMA FFI feature. The wheel smoke test checks RDMA availability, including when both client wheels are installed.
RDMA usage and test guidance
python/README.md, python/DEVELOPER.md, python/AGENTS.md, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, CHANGELOG.md, python/docs/conf.py
Documents RDMA configuration, transfer constraints, build and test setup, and experimental sync-client support.

python/glide-sync/glide_sync/glide_client.py:2136-2158
Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Keep the credential owner alive until deferred native destruction completes.

When _rdma_calls is nonzero, BaseClient.close defers close_client but immediately closes and unregisters the credential owner. The native client can still refresh IAM credentials during this interval. The credential trampoline returns failure, and the native contract does not retry a failed callback.

Close the owner immediately only for synchronous destruction. Otherwise, close and clear it after _end_rdma_call completes deferred close_client.
