Summary

With serverAssisted(true), invalidations the server sends while the client is disconnected never arrive, so after a reconnect the cache served values from before the drop until entryTtlMs ran out. A connection that turned on tracking now flushes the cache when it closes, as the Valkey client-side caching guide asks.

Issue link

This Pull Request is linked to issue: Java: server-assisted client-side cache serves stale values after a reconnect
Closes #7446

Related: #7492 (for issue #7445) also changes multiplexed_connection.rs. The two merge without conflicts.

Features / Behaviour Changes

  • Server-assisted cache: when a connection with CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST closes, for any reason, the cache is flushed, so the first read after the reconnect goes to the server.
  • This also covers the side check in the issue: a client built later from the same ClientSideCache instance no longer gets the old entry.
  • TTL-only caches are unchanged.

Implementation

  • multiplexed_connection.rs: Pipeline and PipelineSink share a tracking_on flag. MultiplexedConnection::new_with_response_timeout sets it once setup_connection has succeeded with server_assisted_cache on, which means CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST returned OK.
  • PinnedDrop for PipelineSink calls flush_all_server_assisted() when the flag is set. The sink is dropped when the connection's driver ends, in the same poll that notifies the disconnect, so the flush lands before glide can reconnect. flush_all_server_assisted() also cancels fills in flight, so a reply read just before the close can't put a stale value back.
  • A connection whose setup failed (for example AUTH rejected while the user is locked out, as in the repro) leaves the cache alone, so failed reconnect attempts don't flush it over and over. Setup can fail after CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST succeeded (on the AZ INFO), but that connection was never handed out, so nothing in the cache came from it.
  • Pipeline::new keeps its signature.

Limitations

  • The whole cache is flushed when any one tracking connection closes. In cluster mode that includes other nodes' keys, and it also happens when glide replaces a tracking connection on purpose (for example a management connection that failed a health check) or when a client closes. Keys aren't tracked per node, and refilling after a disconnect is cheap. A cache shared by several clients is flushed for all of them.
  • Skipping the flush while another tracking connection to the same node is open isn't safe. That connection only has the invalidations sent since it turned tracking on, and glide can connect a replacement before the old connection is dropped: when a request fails with a connection error, the refresh task health-checks the node's user connection, installs a new one if the check fails, and keeps the old management connection.
  • A connection that dies without glide seeing it (no FIN or RST) is flushed only once glide notices the disconnect.

Backports

  • release-2.6 has the same code as main, so this applies as is. release-2.5 has the server-assisted cache but no flush_all_server_assisted, so the backport there uses flush_all. Older lines have no server-assisted cache.

Testing

  • test_server_assisted_cache_flushed_when_connection_drops (glide-core, standalone and cluster): cache a key, then run CLIENT KILL SKIPME YES and SET in one MULTI on the key's node, so the write lands after the cached client's connections are gone and its invalidation is never delivered. The test waits for the cache to empty without sending anything, then checks that a read returns the new value. Both variants fail on main and pass with this change. They use dedicated servers, and the cluster has no replicas, since a replica connection would still deliver the invalidation.
  • Unit tests in multiplexed_connection.rs: the cache is flushed when a tracking connection closes, kept when a connection without tracking closes, and a reply read in the same turn as the close isn't cached. The first and third fail without the flush.
  • test_cache (39 passed) and the engine crate's cargo test --lib (403 passed).
  • cargo fmt --check, both clippy passes, cargo check --no-default-features and cargo check --benches --all-features.
  • Merged with fix(core): release connections when a reconnecting client closes #7492, the two branches combine without conflicts, and the new tests of both pass together.
  • ElastiCache for Valkey 8.2 (cluster mode disabled, TLS, IAM auth, RESP3), with the Java client built from main and from main with this change and fix(core): release connections when a reconnecting client closes #7492 (the Java: close() leaves connections open when a node stopped answering before the close #7445 fix). Same steps as StaleAfterReconnect in the issue, except that a second client cuts the connection with CLIENT KILL ID and SET in one MULTI, since ElastiCache has no ACL SETUSER.
    • main: the client reconnected in 25 ms, then all 10 reads, 1 s apart, returned the old value while the server had the new one. A new client built from the same ClientSideCache instance also got the old value.
    • this change: every read after the reconnect returned the new value, and so did the new client.

With server-assisted caching, invalidations the server sends while
the client is disconnected never arrive, so after a reconnect the
cache served values from before the drop until the entry TTL ran
out. This follows the Valkey client-side caching guide: flush the
local cache when the connection is lost.

A connection now records when its setup has turned tracking on, and
its pipeline sink flushes the cache when it is dropped, through
flush_all_server_assisted so a fill in flight cannot put a stale
value back. A connection whose setup failed tracked nothing and
leaves the cache alone, so failed reconnect attempts do not flush
it over and over. A TTL-only cache is left alone too.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7446 requires that a dropped tracking connection evicts the entries it tracked, so a read after reconnect reaches the server. The issue allows the whole cache for standalone clients, or at least the affected node's keys for cluster clients. The whole-PR diff of multiplexed_connection.rs (merge base to head) shows the implementation: Pipeline and PipelineSink share an Arc<AtomicBool> tracking_on flag. MultiplexedConnection::new_with_response_timeout calls set_tracking_on() only after setup_connection succeeds with server_assisted_cache enabled. PinnedDrop for PipelineSink calls cache.flush_all_server_assisted() when the flag is set. A connection that never enabled tracking does not flush. The whole-PR diff of glide-core/tests/test_cache.rs shows test_server_assisted_cache_flushed_when_connection_drops (standalone and cluster variants). The test caches a key with no TTL, runs CLIENT KILL SKIPME YES and SET in one transaction on the key's node, waits up to 5 s for the cache to empty without sending a request, and then checks that a read returns the new value. Unit tests in multiplexed_connection.rs cover the tracked close (flushed), the untracked close (kept), and a reply read before the close (not cached). Limits: the flush runs only when glide observes the close. A connection that dies silently (no FIN or RST) is flushed later, which the PR states. The repro in the issue uses CLIENT KILL, which sends a close, so the issue's scenario is covered. The Java repro and ElastiCache run in the PR description are manual and non-coding. Evidence limit: the incremental diff from the previous reviewed heads to the current head could not be read (the tool reported missing blobs). This assessment uses the whole-PR diff for the two files above and the PR summary. It does not verify the incremental changes for other files.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diffs read for multiplexed_connection.rs and glide-core/tests/test_cache.rs contain only the tracking flag, the setup hook, the PinnedDrop flush, the unit tests, and the integration test for #7446. The raw summary also lists a CHANGELOG.md entry (+1 line). That entry documents the same fix. The flush also runs when glide replaces a tracking connection on purpose or when a client closes. These cases follow from the same close-based mechanism, and the PR documents them as limitations. Cluster mode flushes all keys, not only the affected node's keys. The issue permits a whole-cache flush, and the PR documents this. No unrelated code change appears in the evidence read. The incremental changes since the previous reviewed heads could not be read, so this conclusion also depends on the whole-PR diff and summary at the current head.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files.

Review state

Ready for human review.
No open findings. The new head only merges main. Main's new Pipeline::kill aborts the driver, which drops the PipelineSink, so a killed tracking connection still flushes the cache. All 16 multiplexed_connection unit tests pass in the engine crate at this head.

Risk: Low. The change only applies when server_assisted_cache is on. If it is wrong, server-assisted cache users in every binding either get extra cache misses or keep the stale-after-reconnect bug.

Open findings: none.

Backport: Needed for release-2.5. Of the maintained lines, only release-2.5 has server-assisted caching (CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST), and it does not flush on disconnect. It also lacks flush_all_server_assisted, so the backport has to use flush_all instead. release-2.4, 2.3 and 2.2 have no server-assisted cache.

Resolve the conflict with valkey-io#7462 in multiplexed_connection.rs by keeping
both changes: Pipeline gets the abort handle and the tracking flag, and
kill() and set_tracking_on() both stay.

Pipeline::kill() aborts the driver, which drops the PipelineSink, so a
killed tracking connection flushes the cache too.

Record tracking when CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST succeeds.

setup_connection enables tracking before the fallible update_az_from_info(con).await? call. If the AZ update fails, setup returns before set_tracking_on() runs, so the dropped sink skips the cache flush. A retry can then return stale entries from the shared cache without contacting the server.

Pass the shared tracking flag to setup_connection, set it immediately after the tracking command succeeds, and pass None for the legacy connection.

This flushes the whole cache even when another tracking connection to the same node is still open, and BCAST still delivers every invalidation to that one. So closing one of two clients that share a cache empties the other client's cache, and in cluster mode losing only a node's user connection flushes while its management connection is still tracking. Counting open tracking connections per node address on the cache, and flushing when a node's count drops to zero, would keep the fix and avoid those refills.

A per-node count would skip the flush when glide replaces a connection that stopped receiving, which is when invalidations get lost. Another connection only has the invalidations sent since it turned tracking on, and on glide's reconnect path the replacement is in place before the old connection is dropped. When a request fails with a connection error, the refresh task PINGs the node's user connection, connects a new one if that fails, and keeps the old management connection; the old user connection goes when the task ends. If the node went half-open, the count at that drop is the new user connection plus the old management connection, so it never reaches zero.

A safe version would skip only when the other connection was tracking before the closing one started. That still flushes when the older of two clients sharing a cache closes, which is the usual order when replacing a client. So I'd keep the flush unconditional: an extra flush costs a refill, a skipped one serves stale values until entryTtlMs. I added a line on this to the comment and to Limitations in 8325567, and can do the narrower version as a follow-up if the refills matter in practice.

Nit: "tracked nothing" isn't quite right, since setup can fail after CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST succeeded (for example on the AZ INFO). Skipping the flush is safe because the connection was never handed out, so nothing in the cache came from it. Saying that here also explains why the flag doesn't need to be set right after the tracking command.

Reworded in 8325567, thanks. That also answers CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding about setting the flag right after CLIENT TRACKING.

Setup can fail after CLIENT TRACKING ON BCAST succeeded, on the AZ
INFO, so "tracked nothing" was wrong. Skipping the flush is safe
because that connection was never handed out, so nothing in the cache
came from it.

Also say why the flush on close doesn't skip when another tracking
connection to the node is open: that connection only has the
invalidations sent since it turned tracking on, and glide can connect
a replacement before the old connection is dropped.
