Summary

  • New cert_binding library: hashes the leaf TBSCertificate in-circuit (sha256_var) and walks its DER from offset 0 to extract the P-256 SPKI key and the validity dates. This closes the gap where the leaf key used for the signature check was not tied to the certificate that was signed.
  • proof_a_ecdsa_p256_v2 and proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2: ProofA with the leaf key and validity taken from the signed TBS.
  • proof_b_es256_v2_core library plus two size classes, proof_b_es256_v2 (3072-byte sig_structure, 1280-byte claim) and proof_b_es256_v2_large (8192 / 2048).
  • Existing circuits are unchanged.

Limits

  • P-384 leaves signed with SHA-384 are not supported yet (the SHA-256 digest is left-padded to 48 bytes).
  • RSA/PS256 and the skip-binding variants have no v2 version yet.

Test plan

  • nargo test for the new libraries and bins
  • End to end in the browser with a Samsung Galaxy S25 sample (P-384 chain): proved, verified by the API sidecar, selective disclosure proof made and re-checked

bind_leaf_cert(tbs, tbs_len) computes SHA-256 over tbs[0..tbs_len] and
walks the DER from offset 0 to extract the P-256 subject key and the
validity dates as unix seconds. Tests use real Leica, Samsung and Adobe
certificates from public C2PA samples.

The leaf TBSCertificate (up to 1280 bytes) is now a private input. The
circuit hashes and DER-walks it with cert_binding, verifies the
intermediate signature over that hash, and takes the leaf key and dates
from the parsed bytes. Removes the free tbs_hash_bytes and leaf key
inputs and the public cert_not_before, cert_not_after and
tbs_hash_commitment. Buffers: claim 1280, EXIF 1280, actions 1024.

P-256 leaf issued by a P-384 intermediate signing with ecdsa-with-SHA256.
The leaf TBSCertificate (up to 1280 bytes) is a private input, hashed and
DER-walked with cert_binding. The SHA-256 digest is left-padded to the
48-byte big-endian input of verify_ecdsa_p384 (e is the whole 256-bit
digest, per FIPS 186-5). Leaf key and dates come from the parsed TBS and
the dates stay private. Removes tbs_hash_sha384, tbs_hash_commitment,
leaf_pubkey_x/y and cert_not_before/after. Buffers: claim 1280, EXIF
1280, actions 1024. Public layout (52 values) matches p256_v2.

ecdsa-with-SHA384 leaves are not supported by this circuit.

Tested on the real Samsung leaf: verify passes; a flipped TBS byte and a
substituted SPKI key are rejected.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
proof_b_es256_v2_core holds the ProofB ES256 logic, generic over the
sig_structure and claim buffer sizes. Two thin bins fix the size class:
proof_b_es256_v2 (3072 / 1280) and proof_b_es256_v2_large (8192 / 2048).

cert_not_before and cert_not_after are removed from the public inputs and
the validity check is dropped; ProofA v2 checks proof_timestamp against
dates bound to the CA-signed TBS. Public layout: trust_list_root,
content_hash, nullifier, proof_timestamp, claim_hash_commitment,
content_hash_offset, then link_commit returned.

The core lib has end-to-end tests on a synthetic ES256 vector (valid
case plus tampered sig_structure, claim offset, leaf key, content hash,
nullifier and oversized timestamp).

The new circuits can verify content and metadata statements that the signed claim does not support. Claims above 1280 bytes also cannot complete the advertised large-proof pairing. Correct these binding and compatibility problems before merging.

Correct the file names and bignum version in VENDORED_FROM.md.

The provenance document does not match the vendored tree or the package manifest. Line 16 names lib.nr and line 17 names p384.nr. Neither file exists under src/crypto/noir_bigcurve_vendor/. The tree contains mod.nr as the module root and curves/secp384r1.nr for P-384. Line 21 states noir-bignum v0.8.2, but Nargo.toml pins bignum to tag = "v0.9.2".

A maintainer who diffs this vendor copy against upstream by the listed names will find no lib.nr or p384.nr. A maintainer who updates the dependency from this document will target v0.8.2 when the package uses v0.9.2.

📝 Suggested fix

+- Extracted core files only (mod.nr, curve_jac.nr, scalar_field.nr)
-- Added P-384 curve parameters in p384.nr
+- Added P-384 curve parameters in curves/secp384r1.nr
 - Removed test_data.nr (large file not needed for production)

 ## Dependencies

+- noir-bignum v0.9.2 (matches `bignum` tag in proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/Nargo.toml)

Confirm the upstream-to-local file mapping before merging. The upstream repository was not inspected here. The compatibility note about noir-bignum@v0.8.0 also needs review. It is stale against the v0.9.2 pin.

proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/src/crypto/noir_bigcurve_vendor/mod.nr:948-953
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Handle the zero-NMuls case in evaluate_linear_expression or reject it explicitly.

evaluate_linear_expression reads tables[0], scalars[0], and transcript[8 * NMuls] at proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/src/crypto/noir_bigcurve_vendor/mod.nr:956-957. These reads are not guarded by NMuls > 0. The tables array has length NMuls, so a call with NMuls = 0 reads index 0 of an empty array.

The generic signature accepts NMuls = 0. The trait declaration at mod.nr:65 and the function at mod.nr:915-919 take mul_points: [Curve; NMuls], and no bound excludes zero. A point-only call, such as evaluate_linear_expression::<F, Curve, NScalarSlices, 0, 1>([], [], [add_point]), therefore fails instead of returning the sum of the add points. The call needs an explicit NScalarSlices annotation because [] does not determine it.

The current callers in this project do not hit this path. src/crypto_utils.nr:54 passes two multiplication points, and secp384r1.nr:125 passes one add point with points and scalars. Fixing this requires a precondition or a separate add-only path. The transcript layout also changes with NMuls = 0, so a one-line edit is not established as safe.

Recommended action: document the NMuls > 0 precondition on the trait method. Alternatively, add a compile-time check that rejects NMuls = 0. If an add-only expression is required, handle it on a separate path and verify the transcript layout.

Minor · Reject impossible calendar days in read_time. · lib.nr:120-121

cert_binding/src/lib.nr:120-121
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject impossible calendar days in read_time.

read_time checks only that day is between 1 and 31. It does not check the length of the month. A trusted CA can sign a TBS whose validity date is impossible, such as 250231Z (2025-02-31). read_time accepts it, and days_from_civil normalizes it to a different date. For this example, the result is 2025-03-03. bind_leaf_cert hashes the same bytes that the CA signed, so ProofA's signature and trust-list checks pass. ProofA then compares its timestamp against the normalized not_before and not_after. An X.509 validator rejects this certificate, but ProofA accepts it.

The trigger needs a trusted intermediate to encode an invalid date. An attacker cannot create this input without the CA's signature. The effect is a validity bound shifted by up to a few days.

🐛 Suggested fix
-    assert((day >= 1) & (day <= 31), "Time: bad day");
+    let leap = (year % 4 == 0) & ((year % 100 != 0) | (year % 400 == 0));
+    let max_day = if month == 2 { if leap { 29 } else { 28 } } else if (month == 4) | (month == 6) | (month == 9) | (month == 11) { 30 } else { 31 };
+    assert((day >= 1) & (day <= max_day), "Time: bad day");

Also update the strictness note at cert_binding/src/lib.nr:28 from "day 1-31" to "day valid for the month".

Add a negative test for Merkle path tampering.

The Merkle tests do not detect a regression in compute_merkle_root that ignores path or indices. The current computation uses indices to choose the left and right inputs and path[i] as the sibling at each level. This is a test coverage gap, not a functional defect.

  • test_merkle_root_computation checks only that the same inputs give the same root and that a different leaf gives a different root. If path or indices were ignored, both assertions would still pass.
  • good() sets trust_list_root with the same compute_merkle_root call. verify_proof_b_es256 then asserts computed_root == trust_list_root. A regressed function produces matching roots, so the positive end-to-end test still passes.
  • No negative test changes c.path, c.indices, or c.trust_list_root. No test expects the "Intermediate not in trust list" failure.

Add a negative case that changes a path element. The correct code changes the computed root and triggers the membership assertion. A regressed function leaves the root unchanged, so the test fails and reports the regression.

Add a main test for the nullifier binding.

No test in proof_a_ecdsa_p256_v2 calls main. The nullifier check at src/main.nr:187-188 is therefore not exercised by the package tests. Removing that assertion, or passing the wrong value into expected_nullifier, would leave the in-package tests passing.

test_nullifier_derivation_ecdsa (src/main.nr:533-540) hashes two constants and asserts that the results differ. Its name suggests coverage of the derivation, but it does not call main. The real_cert_tests module calls only verify_leaf_certificate.

Add a test that calls main with a valid signed-certificate fixture and the correct nullifier. Add a second case that changes nullifier and expects the Invalid nullifier (leaf key binding failed) failure. Building the main input set requires the certificate, signature, Merkle path, claim hash commitment, and hash-chain inputs. Reuse the cert_binding::test_vectors fixtures where possible.

Bound assertion-hash offsets by claim_length, not MAX_CLAIM_SIZE.

extract_assertion_hash_from_claim checks hash_offset + 32 <= MAX_CLAIM_SIZE. The signature covers only the first claim_length bytes. A prover can place a digest in the unsigned padding and pass the EXIF or actions assertion chain with an assertion that the signed claim does not reference.

Trigger: claim_length is below MAX_CLAIM_SIZE, and exif_assertion_hash_offset or actions_assertion_hash_offset is at or above claim_length. The prover then writes SHA256(attacker_assertion) at that offset. Consequence: verify_assertion_hash or verify_actions_assertion_hash accepts the attacker's assertion. For actions assertions, the circuit returns that digest as a public output (actions_assertion_hash).

The circuit documents this check as proof that the assertion is referenced by the signed claim. That guarantee does not hold.

🐛 Suggested fix
 pub fn extract_assertion_hash_from_claim(
     claim_bytes: [u8; MAX_CLAIM_SIZE],
+    claim_length: u32,
     hash_offset: u32
 ) -> [u8; 32] {
     let mut assertion_hash: [u8; 32] = [0; 32];

-    // Bounds check
+ // Bounds check: the 32-byte hash must lie inside the signed claim bytes
     assert(
-        hash_offset + 32 <= MAX_CLAIM_SIZE,
+        hash_offset + 32 <= claim_length,
         "Assertion hash offset out of bounds"
     );

Update every caller to pass claim_length. Callers include verify_full_hash_chain, verify_assertion_chain, verify_actions_assertion_chain, and the main.nr call sites. The test at hash_chain.nr that calls extract_assertion_hash_from_claim(claim_bytes, 10) also needs the new argument.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed capture time.

main range-checks the free witness exact_timestamp against time_min and time_max, then commits to it in time_commitment. No step in main reads the capture time from the signed assertion. Step 8 calls only verify_claim_hash, verify_content_hash_binding, and verify_assertion_chain, and verify_assertion_chain checks only the assertion hash. The helper verify_timestamp_binding has no call site in main.nr. A prover can therefore choose any value in the disclosed window, and the proof attests a capture time that the signed metadata does not support. This gap applies whether skip_assertion_hash_verification is 0 or 1.

Wire the helper into the Step 8 path, with these changes:

  • Add a timestamp_offset: u32 witness and pass exact_timestamp as u64 as expected_timestamp.
  • Constrain timestamp_offset so the encoded integer lies inside exif_assertion_length. extract_timestamp_from_cbor checks reads only against MAX_EXIF_ASSERTION_SIZE, not against the assertion length. Without this bound, the compared value can come from bytes that the assertion hash does not cover.
  • Choose the offset to select the capture-time item. An equality check against any integer in the assertion does not bind the capture time.
  • Decide how the skip flag applies. verify_timestamp_binding always calls verify_full_hash_chain with the assertion arguments. Calling it when skip_assertion_hash_verification is 1 therefore runs the assertion check that the flag disables.

In main, bind exact_timestamp to the signed capture-time item by wiring
verify_timestamp_binding into the Step 8 path and passing exact_timestamp as the
expected timestamp. Add a timestamp_offset witness, constrain the encoded

Bind exact_edit_timestamp to the signed actions assertion.

exact_edit_timestamp is a free private witness. The edit-time range check (lines 243-251) and edit_time_commitment (lines 375-378) use it without comparing it to any signed value. A prover can choose any value inside [edit_time_min, edit_time_max], and the returned commitment binds that chosen value. The header comment at line 88 says these bounds "constrain the edit/signing timestamp." The current code does not provide that guarantee.

actions_assertion_bytes is covered by the signed claim. verify_actions_assertion_chain (hash_chain.nr:473-483) checks only the SHA-256 digest of those bytes against the claim hash. The circuit does not parse an edit time from the bytes. ProofB has no edit-time input, so it cannot supply the binding.

Parse the edit time from the signed actions assertion inside the circuit. Then assert that exact_edit_timestamp equals the parsed value. First confirm the field name and CBOR encoding of the edit time in c2pa.actions.v2. The existing extract_timestamp_from_cbor (hash_chain.nr:176) accepts only CBOR unsigned integers (major type 0). It does not apply to an unconfirmed encoding. This change also needs parser tests. No localized diff is proposed.

Bind the exact GPS witnesses to the signed EXIF values before the range check.

The location range proof accepts any private exact_lat_scaled, exact_lon_scaled, and sign bits that fall inside the disclosed circle. No constraint ties these values to the GPS coordinates in exif_assertion_bytes. A prover can supply the circle center as the exact location. The circuit then passes the range check and commits to that false location.

The GPS binding comment in proof_a_ecdsa_p256_v2/src/hash_chain.nr says the hash chain binds the GPS values. The hash chain binds only the assertion bytes. It does not bind the witnesses that the circuit uses for the range proof and location commitment. The comment's security guarantee is therefore not enforced for location_commitment.

This affects the current circuit on every path that uses the location range proof. A signed image with a location outside the requested circle can produce a valid proof for a location inside the circle.

Any fix must add an in-circuit check that extracts the signed GPS values from exif_assertion_bytes and compares them with the witnesses. Alternatively, the circuit can derive the location witnesses from those bytes. The inspected source does not establish a smaller correction. The comment does not propose a diff.

Fix the packing loop in poseidon_hash_bytes so seed bytes reach the hash.

packed_seed is declared without mut and is never written, so Poseidon receives an all-zero array for every seed. The inner loop also reads padded_seed[i] where it should read padded_seed[i * 31 + j]. Both defects sit in the same packing step, and fixing only the index leaves the hash input zero. With both fixed, each seed byte contributes to outer_hash, salt, x, and y.

At head, poseidon_hash_bytes returns the same value for every seed of a given length. hash_to_curve therefore returns the same point for those seeds. The public Curve::hash_to_curve trait method exposes this deterministic wrong result. The defect is latent in this repository. The compiled test_hash_to_curve calls Secp384r1::hash_to_curve("hello world".as_bytes()), but it only asserts that the result is on the curve, so it does not detect this bug. The only other caller, derive_offset_generators, is commented out in utils.nr:2.

Bind exact_timestamp to the signed capture time inside main.

main range-checks exact_timestamp only against time_min and time_max (proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/src/main.nr:235-243). It then hashes that value into time_commitment (main.nr:358). No constraint ties exact_timestamp to the signed exif_assertion_bytes. The only check on those bytes is the assertion hash, from verify_assertion_chain (main.nr:326-333, proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/src/hash_chain.nr:411-425). A prover with one authentic signed assertion can witness any exact_timestamp in the public range, and the proof still verifies.

The timestamp binding helper is never called. verify_timestamp_binding (hash_chain.nr:336-362) extracts the CBOR timestamp and asserts it equals expected_timestamp. Only its definition appears in the search output.

Fix this inside the circuit. After the verify_assertion_chain call, extract the capture-time field from the authenticated assertion and assert it equals exact_timestamp as u64. The offset of that field must be constrained to lie within the authenticated exif_assertion_length. An arbitrary offset is not enough, because a prover could bind to a different signed integer in the assertion.

In main, after verify_assertion_chain authenticates exif_assertion_bytes, bind
the extracted capture-time field to exact_timestamp as u64 instead of relying
only on the public time range and time_commitment. Constrain the field’s offset
to the authenticated exif_assertion_length, using the existing timestamp-binding
logic where appropriate, so it cannot select an unrelated signed integer.

Bind exact_edit_timestamp to authenticated edit, signing, or export time before exposing edit_time_commitment.

In proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2/src/main.nr:250-262, a nonzero exact_edit_timestamp passes when it lies within [edit_time_min, edit_time_max]. The circuit checks only those two range bounds. No constraint ties the value to authenticated data. Lines 362-366 compute edit_time_commitment as Poseidon2::hash([exact_edit_timestamp, edit_time_salt], 2), and the circuit returns it as a public output. A prover can choose any in-range edit time, and the proof still verifies. The commitment therefore does not attest the edit time to a verifier. Any consumer that reads it as an attested edit time can accept a chosen value.

The circuit checks actions_assertion_bytes only by hash. It verifies the bytes against the claim hash and outputs actions_assertion_hash. It does not extract a time from those bytes.

Add a constraint that binds exact_edit_timestamp to an authenticated edit, signing, or export time. Until that binding exists, do not treat edit_time_commitment as an attested edit time. This repository does not define a trusted time source or the layout of the actions assertion, so this review gives no code change.

Bind exact_lat_scaled and exact_lon_scaled to the signed EXIF GPS values.

The circuit does not constrain the witnessed coordinates to the GPS values in the signed assertion. The privacy-circle check and location_commitment both use the witnessed values directly. A prover who holds a validly signed assertion can witness a different coordinate inside the requested circle. The proof then verifies and commits to a location that the signed image does not contain.

The assertion hash check does not close this gap. It shows that exif_assertion_bytes match the signed claim. Nothing in the circuit reads those bytes to recover latitude or longitude, or compares them with the witnessed values. The module comment in hash_chain.nr says GPS is protected because "any modification to the GPS values would change the hash." That argument covers changes to the assertion bytes. It does not cover witness values that are independent of those bytes. The comment also says "The CLIENT extracts GPS from the verified bytes," so the GPS binding depends on the client supplying honest witnesses.

A fix needs one of these changes:

  • Parse the GPS rational values from the verified assertion bytes in the circuit, and constrain them to exact_lat_scaled, exact_lon_scaled, and the sign flags.
  • Add a mandatory receiver check that extracts GPS from the verified assertion and compares it with the commitment inputs. The receiver must reject any mismatch.

If the intended guarantee is that the proof attests the signed GPS, the current design does not provide it. The SECURITY.md note discloses that the circuit does not parse EXIF, but it does not state that the location witnesses are unconstrained. A safe localized diff is not established, so none is proposed.

Bind content_hash to bytes inside claim_length.

verify_content_hash_in_claim checks only content_hash_offset + 32 <= C, where C is the buffer size. It does not check claim_length. The claim hash and the signature embedding cover only the first claim_length bytes. Bytes at index claim_length and above are neither hashed nor signed, so a prover can set them freely. A chosen content_hash placed there passes the binding check, and the public content_hash is then not in the signed claim.

The buffer size is 1280 in proof_b_es256_v2 and 2048 in proof_b_es256_v2_large.

Trigger: claim_length = 96 and content_hash_offset = 128. The bound check passes (128 + 32 <= 1280). No later check ties the offset to claim_length. The nullifier and link commitment do not constrain the claim bytes.

Valid claims already satisfy content_hash_offset + 32 <= claim_length, because an embedded hash lies inside the hashed claim. Add the check in the ProofB core, where the optional binding runs:

Suggested fix

         verify_content_hash_binding(claim_bytes, content_hash_offset, content_hash);
     }

The ProofA edits go at the call sites in main.nr, not in the shared helper. claim_length is a parameter of main in both ProofA circuits, so the check has the value it needs there.

Large ProofB claims above 1280 bytes cannot pair with ProofA v2.

proof_b_es256_v2_large accepts claims up to MAX_CLAIM_SIZE = 2048 and documents pairing with proof_a_ecdsa_p256_v2 and proof_a_ecdsa_p384_v2. Both ProofA v2 circuits set MAX_CLAIM_SIZE = 1280. They declare claim_bytes: [u8; MAX_CLAIM_SIZE] and call verify_claim_hash, which asserts claim_length <= MAX_CLAIM_SIZE. A claim of 1281 to 2048 bytes cannot be hashed on the ProofA side, so the paired claim_hash_commitment and link_commit values cannot match. Claims of 1280 bytes or fewer still pair correctly, and the 8192-byte Sig_structure limit does not affect the ProofA limit.

The wrapper should either stop advertising the 2048-byte claim class or pair with ProofA v2 variants that accept larger claims. The first option is a one-line change in this wrapper. It keeps the 8192-byte Sig_structure mode for claims of 1280 bytes or fewer:

Suggested fix
-/// Buffers: MAX_SIG_STRUCTURE_SIZE 8192, MAX_CLAIM_SIZE 2048.
+/// Buffers: MAX_SIG_STRUCTURE_SIZE 8192, MAX_CLAIM_SIZE 1280.

+global MAX_CLAIM_SIZE: u32 = 1280;

Accepting larger claims requires raising MAX_CLAIM_SIZE in both ProofA v2 hash_chain.nr files. That change also increases circuit size and needs its own review.
