Problem and value

  • Related issue: Fixes Add Semantic Comparison for Workflow Diagrams #1134.
  • The CLI compares Architecture snapshots only. Valid Workflow revisions can differ semantically, but compare workflow is currently unsupported.
  • This PR adds a Workflow-only deterministic semantic delta. Stable node and edge IDs drive matching; authored labels, properties, endpoints, lanes, phases, groups and main path are reported, while presentation-only fields are ignored.

AI assistance and accountability

  • AI use: implementation, investigation, tests, and review assistance.
  • Accountable contributor: @outlier27-cell.
  • I reviewed the submitted changes and explanation, understand their impact, and can answer questions about them. Validation results and gaps are recorded below.

Stability impact

  • Architecture comparison remains unchanged. Workflow inputs are schema and semantic validated before comparison.
  • Output receipts must be .json both as authored and after filesystem resolution; comparison never replaces an input or a non-JSON target.
  • Non-JSON output now gives the total and the semantic entries; --json remains machine-readable and unchanged.

Tests run

  • Current head: d6153e7d1e88d5a1ec76d9942ec9984f2271b83b, rebased onto the current dev.
  • node scripts/run-tests.mjs test/workflow-compare.test.mjs — 10 passed, 1 explicit Windows symlink-capability skip, 0 failed. This covers structured failure diagnostics, output aliases and unresolvable output parents, and normalized semanticChecks deltas.
  • node --check archify/bin/archify.mjs — passed.
  • Browser checks are not applicable: this PR does not change rendering or Viewer behavior. GitHub Actions for the current head completed successfully: 22 checks, including full regression, both browser-regression lanes, ZIP freshness, package smoke, Windows portability, WebM decode, website, and CodeRabbit. Deployment jobs were skipped as expected.

Generated artifacts

  • archify.zip was rebuilt with the canonical Node 22 toolchain to include the CLI change.
  • No renderer template, gallery, or Reader artifact changes remain in this PR.

Merge danger

Door: two-way

This is an additive, Workflow-only CLI capability. Existing Architecture comparison and renderer behavior are unaffected.

Review follow-up

The recurring consumer is a workflow author or coding agent reviewing an authored Workflow change. archify compare workflow before.json after.json --json reports changes to nodes, edges, lanes, phases, groups, or mainPath when behavioral review is needed, and an empty result when only presentation changed. It is a semantic-review receipt, not a runtime verifier, merge gate, or larger comparison framework. Integration remains ready for the maintainer's scope decision recorded at #1143 (comment).

📝 Summary

Compared base 25cf3708 with head 81457176; the inspected checkout is 1a929c46. Workflow comparison validates both inputs and reports deterministic authored changes to nodes, edges, lanes, phases, groups, mainPath, and semantic checks. It ignores presentation-only changes and leaves Architecture comparison unchanged.

The author reports 10 passing tests, one Windows symlink-capability skip, and a passing syntax check. The tested revision is unspecified, so these remain author-reported evidence, not verified at the inspected checkout. No CI result was observed for 1a929c46. Static tests do not establish browser or perceptual acceptance.

The compare command now supports workflow documents. It validates inputs and output paths, compares entities by stable ID, and reports semantic changes while omitting presentation-only fields. It can write a JSON receipt or print a human-readable summary. CLI tests cover comparison results, diagnostics, and output-path handling. The live-proof metadata records an updated GIF size and hash.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 1a929

Workflow comparison can accept an invalid Workflow, and a malformed command can replace an input or another file with a failure receipt. Some failures also lack actionable diagnostics. Resolve these paths before merging.

Full details: Contribution Scope

Explanation

The PR describes the user problem and a focused Workflow-only comparison, and linked issue #1134 documents that scope. The remaining scope-evidence failure is unresolved. The diff changes both archify/bin/archify.mjs and archify.zip. The latest description says the archive was rebuilt with Node 22 and that CI is running, but it does not state the supported Node >=18 runtime, the separate canonical ZIP requirement (official Node 22 with zlib 1.3.1-e00f703), the exact build command, or a rollback path for the new CLI and archive. It also gives no reproducible freshness receipt. Repository guidance requires compatibility and generated-artifact evidence (CONTRIBUTING.md:35-41, 265-281); CI checks archive freshness by rebuilding and comparing exact bytes (.github/workflows/ci.yml:294-301). This is a missing scope/evidence explanation, not a confirmed runtime defect.

Resolution

Update the PR description with the package impact: runtime support remains Node >=18, while canonical ZIP generation separately requires official Node 22 with bundled zlib 1.3.1-e00f703. State the exact command scripts/build-zip.sh and provide a reproducible freshness receipt or CI result showing that a clean tracked-source build matches the committed archify.zip. Add a rollback path, such as removing the Workflow dispatch and reverting the archive without changing Architecture comparison. Alternatively, remove archify.zip and record a maintainer decision to deliver the package update separately.

Full details: Validation Evidence

Explanation

FAIL — final-head validation is not demonstrated. Evaluated range: base 5ecbd1b, head 1a929c4. The PR body reports 10 passes, 1 skip, and a syntax check at 4e49900, not at the evaluated head. The latest commit changes semantic-check normalization and its test fixture. The current test now uses reachable node final and includes both store and user as roots, so the earlier fixture defect is corrected; however, no test result confirms that correction or the new normalization cases. The supplied review says GitHub Actions were running, but provides no completed final-head results. I observed that the ZIP's CLI entry matches the current CLI source byte-for-byte. That does not establish a canonical Node 22 rebuild, exact archive reproducibility, or package-smoke success. I also verified that the live-proof GIF metadata and three artifact hashes match their files, and that the Checkout receipt matches its HTML artifact. Those generated-output checks address the prior stale-hash concerns. The remaining gap is the changed CLI/test/package validation, not those artifact hashes.

Resolution

Owner: PR contributor. Run node scripts/run-tests.mjs test/workflow-compare.test.mjs at head 1a929c4 and report all 11 tests and any skip. Provide final-head core/full regression and package-smoke results, or link equivalent successful CI runs. Rebuild archify.zip with canonical Node 22 and provide the byte-for-byte comparison result against the tracked archive. These checks will establish coverage for the final semantic-check changes and packaged CLI.

Separate the coordinate-only and stability checks.

The author reports both as covered at head 4148c8d, but this test changes the label and coordinate together and runs comparison once. It passes even if coordinates cause modifications. Add a coordinate-only case with an empty delta and compare repeated JSON results. (github.com)

- Around line 3682-3684: Update the compare failure handling around the
`receipt` object to expose diagnostics at the top level for every failure,
reusing workflow diagnostics currently under `details.diagnostics` and providing
an empty diagnostics array when none exist. Include those diagnostics in
human-readable stderr output as well as JSON output, preserving stable

Contributor Author

The recurring use case is semantic review of an authored Workflow change. A workflow author or coding agent edits retry, approval, recovery, routing, or phase behavior, then runs archify compare workflow before.json after.json --json in the PR/agent loop.

A non-empty change in nodes, edges, lanes, phases, groups, or mainPath tells the reviewer that the workflow's authored topology or decision path changed and needs behavioral review. An empty result when only coordinates or presentation fields moved tells the reviewer that no workflow-logic review is needed. The JSON is therefore a small agent-readable semantic-review receipt, not a runtime verifier, generic diff platform, automatic merge gate, or proposal for a larger comparison framework.

Review comments at @archify/bin/archify.mjs:
- Line 3694: Update the output-resolution error handling around
realpathSync.native so ENOTDIR sets outputFailure and routes through
failWorkflow, returning a JSON receipt without writing a receipt file; preserve
the existing handling for ENOENT and other errors.
- Around line 3795-3804: Update the workflow comparison before receipt
construction to compare base and head semanticChecks using rule-aware
normalization, and add detected changes to the changes object so they appear in
the receipt and summary even when the graph is unchanged.

Review comments at @archify/bin/archify.mjs:
- Line 3822: Update the semanticChecks normalization around checks so empty
requiredEdges and requiredPaths lists are treated as absent before comparison.
Preserve empty allowedRoots and allowedTerminals lists as meaningful values, and
leave other normalization behavior unchanged.
- Line 3816: Update the relation ordering comparator to use locale-independent
code-unit ordering for both `left.from` and `left.to`, matching the stable-ID
ordering in `workflow-compiler.mjs`, so receipt order is consistent across host
locales.

Review comments at @test/workflow-compare.test.mjs:
- Line 139: Update the semantic-check fixture in the comparison test: change the
required path from user to response to the reachable user-to-final path, and
include store in both workflows’ allowedRoots. Keep the successful comparison
assertion for valid workflows, and add a separate rejection assertion for
invalid semantic checks so the test verifies the existing validation without
making valid comparisons fail.

Bring in tt-a1i#1162 so the branch is current with dev. No product behavior changes.

Contributor Author

@tt-a1i Ready for review.

Head d6153e7d includes current dev (#1162). All 22 checks passed, with no unresolved threads.

The recurring consumer is a workflow author or coding agent. A non-empty semantic diff means the authored workflow logic needs review; an empty diff means only presentation changed. Integration remains held for your scope decision. Please review.
